Sailing season underway

GREAT WEEKEND: Billy had a great race over the weekend winning both races. Photo: Supplied.

A CLOUDY day, with 11-16 knot winds, welcomed boats back to the water at Port MacDonnell for the second half of the sailing season.

Race officer, Evan Steele set a traditional Olympic course for both races of the day.

The day began with some drama, with the second person on the rescue boat needing to be replaced with an extra crew member from one of the racing boats.

Six boats took to the water to compete in the two back to back races.

The field was spread at the starting line with Sabre ‘Billy’ crossing the start line first followed by ‘Minty’, an Austral 20.

Some confusion about the placement of the first mark allowed Austral 20 ‘Windy Fred’ to take the lead and they held on throughout the race giving them line honours, followed by Sabre ‘Billy’.

Two legs of the course were shortened to allow for a quicker second race.

Once more ‘Billy’ was the first boat across the start line, with ‘Windy Fred’ close behind them.

All boats crossed the start line much closer to each other in the second race than they did the first one.

The shorter course allowed for the fleet to stay closer together for the second race.

This time ‘Billy’ was able to take line honours and Austral 20 ‘Mirage’ came in second.

All six boats finished both races.
