Motorsport: Blue Lake karters hit the road

ON THE PACE: Eight-year-old Hayley Fewins in action at Glenburnie Raceway leading the field in Cadet 9 class.

MOUNT Gambier Kart Club members spread themselves far and wide across two states last weekend, representing their local club in a number of karting events, all at different levels of competition.

Parker Scott travelled north of Adelaide to the Barossa Valley for round two of the SA State Series.

The young Cadet12 entrant was one of 12 drivers in his class and put in a great effort early to qualify just half a second off the pace, gridding up from the third row.

Good placings in the heat races continued during the final where he crossed the finish line in fifth to secure a good haul of points to the series total.

Across the border in Geelong, round one of the Victorian State Championships were held, where MGKC had four members competing.

Charlie Evans suited up in the youngest field on offer, Cadet 9, where 15 entrants qualified.

Evans was on the pace, with a best lap time just six tenths off the pole sitter, earning him a starting position of seventh.

Despite a DNF in heat one, Evans fought back in the final to finish in his best position for the event in fifth place.

KA4 drivers Jobe Stewart and Kai Allen were caught up in a five-kart pileup during a heat race early in the event, but good speed from both saw them climb the standings before the final Sunday afternoon.

Both recovered to finish in the top five during the 26-lap final.

Stewart rounded out the top five, while Allen finished on the podium after leading for nine laps and putting in the fastest lap of the race.

Allen also entered the KA3 Junior division and started the weekend off in the best possible way by qualifying in pole position.

Two race wins before the final ensured a front row start but a DNF on lap nine ended his race early.

Finally Morgan Feast entered the over-subscribed class of Tag125 light.

A maximum field of 33 drivers made the cut and Feast qualified in fourth, just over .10 of a second off the pace.

A third place and two wins in the heat races proved Feast was the driver to beat.

His good form in the all-important final continued, as he led from start to finish and took the line honours by nearly two seconds to stand on the top step of the podium.

Back home a number of drivers stayed to support the April club day held at the Glenburnie Raceway complex.

Cadet 9 was won by Hayley Fewins, who took three race wins ahead of Xavier Cain.

Brock Fewins made a clean sweep of Cadet 12, with four wins from four starts in a faultless performance.

KA4 Junior was closely contested between local Tyson White and Horsham driver Robbie Turmine.

Two wins and two second placings each saw the duo tied on points at the conclusion of the day, but the win was awarded to White after securing the final by less than half a second.

Lauren Ferguson took all race wins in KA3 Senior.

Kelvin Moreland and Matt Moreland finished first and second respectively in all four heats in Tag125 Heavy, while Strathdownie’s Andrew Harvey and Melbourne driver Paul Weir both secured race wins in Tag125 Restricted Heavy.

The club will hold its next club day on May 13, with free entry for spectators as the club gears up towards hosting the South Australian State Cup later in the year.
