Racing club harvests vital funds for improvements

CASH CROP: While the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse is currently under reconstruction, work continues to keep cash flowing in, with the Lucerne crop providing valuable income for the Mount Gambier Racing Club.

WITH funding for the Mount Gambier Racing Club a must for its survival, measures have been put in place to ensure money continues to roll in.

The centre of the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse houses around 45 acres of open land, which has undergone many changes over the years.

Previously full of weeds, the ground was sown with wheat, barley and more recently Lucerne, which is then harvested and returns $15-20,000 for the club.

One major area remains an eyesore, but according to club president John Fartch that will all change soon.

The course is currently undergoing a major redevelopment of the racing surface to allow it to cope better with wet weather.

As the drainage system is completed, any excess soil will be used to cover the area and complete the grounds.

That will not only provide extra space for the cash crop, but also beautify the grounds, adding the attraction racing provides in the region.
