Golf: Three-way tie for November medal

CLOSE FINISH: Graham Greenwood was pleased with his A Grade monthly medal victory by just one over Darren Bilney.

PLAYERS were again blessed with superb conditions on Saturday for the Mount Gambier Golf Club’s November medal, with the field size of 108 and the subsequent scoring reflecting that.

Three players tied for round-of-the-day with Gary Button, Graham Greenwood and Darren Griffin all posting five-under, nett 67s.

Both Tony Revill and Darren Bilney posted excellent nett 68s, with Bilney’s score, a three under the card, 69 off the stick.

Ian Ewart, Peter Crow, Lindsay Brown and Jack Jennings all posted nett 70.

Greenwood won the A Grade medal by one from Bilney, Button took the B Grade honours on a count-back from Griffin and Revill claimed the C Grade medal by three from Peter Gardener on nett 71.

Players required nett 72 or better to win a ball, except for Adrian Ballintyne, Garry McCormack and Stacey Parsons who slipped through as the best of the 73’s.

Other winners included Darren Harding, Brian Shanahan, Brian Walsh, Sam Mainwaring, Phil Bliss, Paul Reade, Brad Von Duve, Bill DeGaris, John Miles, David Bruhn, Trent Eitzen and Robert Young.

In the birdie honours 12 players managed 13 birdies, with reigning triple club champion Daryl Morgan bagging the double.

Others winning a ball included Tony Geddes, Joe Clements, Peter Fox, Richard Gosling, Jason Milhouse, Ben Robinson, Michael Cutting, Button, Bilney, Smith and Brown.

Bilney took the A Grade nearest the pin and Peter Jones the C Grade.

Tony Geddes grabbed the B Grade NTP and the pro-shot on the 16th hole, while Milhouse claimed the shot-of-the-day honours on the eight.

Women’s stroke

FAYE Mainwaring had the round of the day with a fine nett 69 in the women’s competition.

She finished four shots clear of Karen Foster, with Dianne O’Donnell third and Marie Douglas fourth, all tied on nett 73.

Bernie Jennings had nett 74 with Lyn Hudson and Heather Chapman both posting nett 75.

The pro-shot on the eighth hole went to O’Donnell, who unfortunately could not roll in the putt, but both Mainwaring and Helen Gregory were able to post a birdie-two.

Thursday stableford

ANOTHER glorious golf day and a bumper field of 93 players saw some fantastic scoring on Thursday.

Keith Couzner, Joel Bryant and Nick Black all posted 44 points, finishing in that order respectively on count-back.

Right behind were John Hopkins and Greg Hudson on 43 points, with Barry Page, Ben Robinson and Ian Ritter just a couple back on 41.

Players needed 39 points to make the cut and win a ball, except for Peter Lock and Mathew Dixon who scraped through as the best of the 38s.

Winners included, David Cameron, Paul Kenny, Peter Raymond, Richard Gosling, Dave Boyce, Bill Degaris, John Sandery, Darren Harding, Brian Shanahan and Tony Steen.

A total of 15 players managed 18 birdie-twos, with Russell Oehms, Degaris and Hudson all producing a pair of twos.

Others settling for one included, Rob McIntyre, Brian Simmonds, Ross Bond, Jim Douglas, Henry Forbes, Chris Gabriel, Patrick Dempsey, Neil Geddes, Barry Brook, Harding, Raymond, and Black.

Nearest the pin on the 16th went to Greg Hudson while Rob McIntyre claimed the shot-of-the-day honours on the signature eighth hole.
