Mount Gambier RSL falls short

Division 1: Mount Gambier Red 87/14 d Mount Gambier RSL Red 74/2

IT was a day Mount Gambier RSL Red would rather forget when it went down to Mount Gambier Red at home in Round 4 of Lower South East Bowling Association Saturday Open Pennant competition.

The team of Robert Corner, Deane Wilkinson, Chris Waugh and skipper Andy Ashby were solid against Kristy Errock, Terry Bruhn, Brad Errock and Tony Renzi.

They leapt to a 17-shot lead by the 10th end, then withstood a mid-game surge from Mount Gambier before carding a 30-21 win.

The team of Jamie Lambert, Michael Fox, Ralph Stafford and skipper Graham Ellis were progressing well at 14-6 on the 10th, before they dropped a succession of shots which included an eight.

The Mount Gambier team of Gary McIntyre, Gary Hocking, Peter Radley and Tony Bowditch pounced and swung the momentum their way.

The RSL unit were continually under pressure and lost 25-37.

Jason Kuring, Peter Roachock, Neil Tobin and skipper Rex Heins had an intense battle against John Reppin, Bryan Vorwerk, Peter Reppin and Greg Carpenter.

They stayed close and managed to level the scores on the 14th, but were unable to get in front of their opponents.

The deficit stretched out and they lost 19-29.

Mount Gambier RSL Blue 83/16 d Mount Gambier Blue 58/0

MOUNT Gambier RSL Blue tasted its first victory for the 2017-18 season with a solid 25-shot victory over Mount Gambier Blue.

Tim Wrightson, Graham Dent, David Edwards and skipper Glenn Wright controlled their game against Tim Radley, Geoff Collins, Jeff England and Perria Davis.
While their scoring stalled in the concluding ends, they finished 30-19.

Gary Bowering, Fiona Pearson, Greg Whitehead and skipper Ron Ploenges had to catch up after a slow start against Jim Butchart, Steve Farrell, Kim Jones and David Babb (skip).

However, a four on the 20th end gave the RSL the lead and they did not look back, finishing 25-19.

Graham Smith, Ian MacIntosh, Gary Feast and skipper Strawb Masters played Leanne Hentschke, John Hughes, Gary Widdison and Ian VonStanke in a see-sawing affair.

The RSL were pegged back on three occasions before a strong run home clinched the 28-20 win.

Division 2: Mount Gambier RSL Red 74/14 d Mount Gambier 64/2

MOUNT Gambier RSL Red made it for wins from as many rounds after it defeated Mount Gambier on Saturday.

Wayne Legutko has impressive figures skippering his rink and this week was no exception.

His team of Simon Attiwill, Craig Pearson and Ron Edlington combined well to defeat Bob Cranwell’s four 27-17.

Dougie McPhail, Paul Griffiths, Graham Crowder and skipper Ian Moulden had their opportunities against Peter Clark’s four, but only managed to win one of the last seven ends to slip behind by four shots, 24-28.

Ian Colbey, Bob Milligan, David Anderson and skipper Noel Miller established a handy lead in the first half against Daryl Ranenberg’s side.

Mount Gambier lifted after the break and the RSL were lucky to hold on and win 20-19.

Port MacDonnell 72/14 d Mount Gambier RSL Blue 63/2

DESPITE a strong first half of play, Mount Gambier RSL Blue went down to a strong Port MacDonnell outfit by nine shots.

John Spehr’s rink lost by just one shot, while the team of Nancye Wilson, Harry Childs, Karen Doman and skipper Ben Masters were able to win winning 24-21 on their rink.

Division 3: Mount Gambier RSL Red 81/16 d Millicent Blue 56/0

MOUNT Gambier RSL Red continued on its winning way against Millicent Blue on the road, claiming a convincing victory.

While the RSL were kept under pressure early, all three rinks comfortably controlled the scoring in the second half.

Mount Gambier RSL Blue 81/14 d Port MacDonnell 64/2

THE Mount Gambier RSL Blue side returned jubilant from its trip to the seaside against Port MacDonnell, winning its second away from home game.

Bruce Holland, Rick Chirgwin, Gavin Clements and skipper David Klem defeated Kevin Norman’s team 26-14, Don Whitmore, Wally Brown, Ken McCormick and skipper Eileen Cruise lost to

Lance Fisher’s side 21-30, while Laurie Franklin, Kim Franklin, Veronica Opie and skipper Les James defeated Ben Tilley’s four 34-20 to hand RSL the win.

Friday Pennant

Division 1: Mount Gambier RSL Blue 63/14 d Naracoorte 27/0

THE Mount Gambier RSL Blue side took full advantage of playing at home and walloped Naracoorte.

Merna Whitehead, Nancye Wilson, Di Adams and skipper Karen Doman demoralised the strong team of Chris Johnson, Jenny Measday, Sue Bennett and Di Brown by scoring 26-0 by the 10th end.

While Naracoorte recovered somewhat and scored 12 to the RSL’s 14 in the remainder of the game, Doman’s team celebrated a huge 40-12 win.

On the neighbouring rink, Kim Franklin, Barb Winterfield, Shirley Gifford and skipper Kath Hearne had a hard-fought win over Malcolm Johnson, Ruth McInnes, Fay Vogel and Chris Murphy.

The RSL turned one shot down at lunch, but had the better of Naracoorte in the afternoon and won eight of the 10 ends to finish eight shots up, 23-15.

Millicent 46/12 d Mount Gambier RSL Red 42/2

JUST two points was all Mount Gambier RSL Red could manage from the 14 on offer when it faced Millicent on the road.

Glenda Dalton, Robert Corner, Beryl Messenger and skipper Maryke Heaver played Faye Hill, Dawn Bellman, Dell Parsons and Andrea Radley.

Millicent had them under pressure from the start and raced to a 10-shot lead.

The RSL rallied and narrowed the gap to three before dropping a six on the 13th end.

Immediately after the lunch break, the RSL collected a five, but Radley’s four were relentless and steadily pulled away to defeat the RSL 29-18.

Jane Crowder, Val Anderson, Jenny Waugh and skipper Veronica Opie played Ros Varcoe, Mary Campbell, Carlene Godden and Lyn Scudds.

Opie’s four began well and established a seven-shot lead in the morning session.

A keen dual developed after lunch, with both teams winning five ends and equal shots.

The result saw Opie’s four ahead 24-17, bu it was not enough for an overall win.

Division 2: Mount Gambier RSL 52/12 d Millicent Red 38/2

MOUNT Gambier RSL travelled to Millicent where it enjoyed its second consecutive victory away from home, this time defeating the strong Millicent Red outfit.

Linley McDonald, Wynne Turner, Pam Klem and skipper Lyn Chirgwin scored mostly in multiples to overwhelm Shirley Thiele, Carol Gibbs, Mary Clifford and Sarah Ross 37-17.

Liz Schroder, Carmel McQuade, Barb Smith and skipper Eileen Cruise battled hard against Judy Lowe, Ella Pietersma, Judy Cheer and Merle Stevens.

They took a while to adjust to the conditions, but caught up and led by two on the 18th before losing their momentum in the run home to go down 15-21.

Division 3: Mount Gambier RSL 59/14 d Penola 36/0

PENOLA was unable to keep up with a strong Mount Gambier RSL side which claimed its third win from as many games.

Skipper Marg Finnis continued an unbroken run of success at this early stage of the season when she led her team of Kathy MacIntosh, Rick Chirgwin and Janet Forster to a fine 37-17 win over Sue Lamont’s team.

Bev Famularo, Nancy Horrigan, Edna Eldridge and skipper Lola McKenzie went neck-and-neck with Maureen Konynenburg’s four.

However, they were able to win 22-19 to deny Penola any points from the encounter.
