THE dream of fruit trees and fresh produce filling the space behind Nangwarry Primary School is one step closer as demolition works start on an ageing and unused classroom.

The 20-year-old classroom will be demolished and replaced with a large school garden.

Staff and students have developed a plan for the almost 300 square metre space, with plans for a number of fruit trees and other produce to be planted for future use.

Nangwarry Primary School principal Erica Hurley said students were excited to see their plans develop.

“We have spent a lot of time with the children planning what we will do with that space,” Ms Hurley said.

“They have put the idea of planting plenty of produce into the space which will be
used for cooking.”

Ms Hurley said the school was considering opening the space for use to the wider community.

“We will look at making it prudently accessible to the community which we are now in the process of working out,” she said.

“We would love for the community to be involved as it has plenty of space to plant everything we want.”
