LIMESTONE Coast police have started an operation reinforcing water safety and fishing regulations as visitors flock to the region’s pristine coastal towns.

Operation Texas will run during summer in collaboration with Primary Industries and Resources South Australia’s Fisheries and Aquaculture branch.

Police and fisheries officers will engage with boat operators and recreational fishers across the district’s coastal towns during the operation to reinforce of marine safety, fishing regulations and related legislative requirements.

Limestone Coast Police officer in charge Superintendent Phil Hoff said the operation would target every legislation associated with the ocean.

“We are looking at safety on vessels, but in addition looking to enforce and educate people about the laws in place around fishing,” he said.

Highlighting the important volunteer role that one officer plays within the region, Supt Hoff said water safety was something all police take seriously.

“One of our police officers is the president of the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club and we continue to promote those messages about swimming between the flags and looking after each other.”

“It is all about looking after the people who are visiting what is an absolute mecca of South Australia, the southern ports.”

Operations manager Inspector Campbell Hill said the operation was directed towards education in line with enhancing community safety.

“It allows for the testing of boat operators for alcohol use and provides the police with an opportunity to give advice on securing personal property during the festive season,” he said.

“We wish to remind everyone to remain respectful towards the environment and each other while enjoying the region.”
