Students help spread festive spirit through song

CHRISTMAS CAROLS: The Penola School Choir will perform later this month at the Presbyterian Church where they will sing Christmas Carols alongside members of the community.

PENOLA students will raise their voices later this month for the Combined Churches of Penola Christmas Carol event.

The choir will perform alongside community members next Sunday night, with event organiser Brendan Provis encouraging residents to join in on the festive activities.

Mr Provis said the last Penola community carols event was held in 2017, with strong numbers turning out for the evening event.

“We had around 80 people come along last time we held the carols which was fantastic,” Mr Provis said.

“I am hoping for the same if not more to come along this year as well.”

Mr Provis hoped the carols would reignite the meaning of Christmas among the local community and encourage residents to remain humble during the season.

“Christians celebrate Christmas and it is important to remember it is one of the biggest celebrations of the Christian faith,” he said.

“These days there are a lot of people turning away from God and something like this in the community reminds people what Christmas is all about.

“We are hoping to see a lot of people coming along and singing some carols during the busy time of the year.”

Students from Penola High School will also attend the event and provide readings for attendees.

“The fact we have school students involved will encourage people to come along,” he said.

“Everyone is welcome to join in as it is a community event.”

Penola Primary School teacher Nicole Lear said choir students enjoy seeing familiar faces among the community and singing well known songs with them.

“This will be the last performance for the choir this year so we are hoping to finish off strong,” Ms Lear said.

“Everyone loves singing along to a Christmas Carol.”

The event will be held at the Presbyterian Church on December 15 and will start at 5.30pm with supper available afterwards.
