COOLER weather across the Limestone Coast has brought a great vintage season, according to Koonara Wines owner Dru Reschke.

The veteran winemaker said cooler weather allowed the acids and flavours to be held within the grapes.

“This allows the regions in the Limestone Coast to come out much better than other warmer regions,” Mr Reschke said.

“I think everyone will see some amazing wines coming from the Limestone Coast compared to the rest of Australia.”

Koonara completed its vintage season last week, after the first pick in February.

“It was a long season for us, but although it felt late compared to the other regions in the state, it was reasonably normal for the Limestone Coast,” Mr Reschke said.

Slightly let down with grape growth this season, Mr Reschke said it was on average with most growers.

“This just means the vines get to focus on ripening the fewer grapes better,” he said.

“Now we are composting the vineyard to build up the biology in the soil to add back as much nutrients into the vine before all the leaves fall off.”

According to Mr Reschke this will help build the vineyard to a 3pc organic material in the soil.

“Studies have shown this will hold an extra Olympic swimming pool of water per hectare in the soil,” he said.

“We are also getting ready to plant more native flowers to attract hunter bugs.

“Once again we did not need to spray even an organic pesticide, but the more biodiversity we have the better we can handle the different seasons.”
