South Australians urged to know consumer rights

CONSUMER and Business Services is encouraging South Australians to know their rights when shopping in holiday sales over the coming weeks.

Consumer Affairs commissioner Dini Soulio said a number of automatic guarantees apply to purchases and encouraged consumers to ensure they get what they pay for.

“Under the Australian Consumer Law, a product or service you pay for must match the description or sample that you choose from, be of an acceptable quality and be fit for the purpose you bought it for,” he said.

“Your rights apply regardless of whether something is on sale or not, or whether you buy in store or online.

“If you do not get what you paid for, you can seek a refund, replacement or repair from the business you bought from.”

Mr Soulio encouraged consumers to keep a proof of purchase, such as a receipt, lay-by agreement or credit card statement.

He also encouraged people to do their homework when signing up for a gym in the new year.

“A number of consumers start the new year with a vow to get fit and we see a number of people signing up for a new gym membership early in the new year,” he said.

“If your new year’s resolution sees you browsing for a new gym membership, make sure you read through the contract carefully to see exactly what services you are signing up to.

“People should pay particular attention to clauses relating to cancelling or suspending the contract, in case that becomes necessary through the year.”

If you need more information on your rights, visit the CBS website at www.cbs.sa.gov.au or contact 131 882.
