THE community continues to rally behind Boandik’s multi-million dollar wellbeing centre as its January construction date nears.

Planning approval from Mount Gambier City Council has been received and tenders will be called in November for construction at Boandik’s Lake Terrace site.

The $4.8m community wellbeing centre will include a long-awaited hydrotherapy pool, over 50s gymnasium and rehabilitation areas.

“We are pleased with the way the project is progressing,” Boandik chief executive Gillian McGinty said.

“We have worked with a group of staff and clients to develop the concept and detailed design and we are now looking forward to calling for tenders next month.”

A community partnership program launched in July has seen a number of businesses and generous individuals pledge thousands of dollars towards the project, with the total contribution now at $168,000.

“Boandik hopes to attract more contributions to help build the centre,” Ms McGinty said.

“As an ageing population, we can all benefit from the facilities which will be on offer.

“Whether it be the therapeutic and remedial benefits of the heated indoor hydrotherapy pool or a focus on keeping fit in the over 50s gymnasium, or recovering from an ailment with the rehabilitation equipment, there are benefits for everyone.”

The pool will be open to the entire community to allow everyone to benefit from hydrotherapy.

“Sports clubs can use hydrotherapy as part of their fitness and recovery programs and those with disabilities can access the pool for mobility benefits as it will have ramp access,” Ms McGinty said.

“We all know it is important to remain active so the gymnasium offers over 50s a relaxed and comfortable environment to exercise with like-minded people.”

Ms McGinty reiterated that all facilities will be accessible to the community.

“This is not an exclusive Boandik project,” she said.

“Boandik has the land and some resources to offer at start-up, but we are seeking others in our community to become involved – it will be a community centre.

“Let’s build this together Mount Gambier.”

Boandik’s community partnership program offers a variety of reciprocal benefits, including marketing and promotional opportunities for business and permanent acknowledgement in the centre of all donors.
