Age no barrier to adventure

ADVENTURE IN THE AIR: Mount Gambier University of the Third Age members take in the stunning scenery below from a hot air balloon over the Murray River.

A GROUP of 25 Mount Gambier University of the Third Age members travelled to Nuriootpa for their annual getaway late last year.

After a 4.30am start, members of the group embarked on a five-hour adventure in a hot air balloon from Blanchetown over the Murray River, taking in amazing views of the countryside and wildlife.

A champagne breakfast followed the early morning adventure.

The group visited a variety of dwellings, including the humble Herbig Tree and historic Collingrove Homestead, the home of the Angus dynasty.

The cohort was warmly welcomed by former U3A members Judy and Roger Jericho at their home in Williamstown, where they enjoyed lunch and country hospitality.

An outstanding performance and presentation of the 1877 Hill and Son Grand Organ was put on for the group at the Tanunda Soldiers Memorial Hall.

The organ was originally installed at the Adelaide Town Hall, but relocated and lovingly restored at the Tanunda Town Hall.

Other activities included a visit to the Whispering Wall, coffee at the lavender farm and a wander through the rose garden at Chateau Barossa.

Members visited Seppeltsfield Winery, where they enjoyed wine tasting and sampling local cheeses and delicacies that make the Barossa famous.

Joining the Gawler U3A for dinner one evening showed Mount Gambier members how broad and inclusive the organisation is and how a diverse group can enjoy the luxury of retirement, while gaining fellowship and knowledge.

A farewell dinner at the Vine Inn Hotel was the perfect way to finish another successful annual getaway.
