PENOLA was filled with Christmas excitement last Friday as hundreds of people enjoyed a fun filled evening of Christmas tunes, face painting and decorated bikes as part of the town’s Christmas street party.

Children were treated to a visit from Santa Claus as they eagerly lined up for a glimpse of the jolly red man to receive their lollies and water pistols.

Vibrant tinsel and Christmas colours covered children’s bikes on display as part of the decorated bike competition.

The competition was judged by the principals of the three Penola schools and attendees picked the crowd favourite.

The Under 10 girls winner in the competition was Louise who impressively decorated her bike with pink flamingos, with the Under 10 boys win going to George who made an additional gift carrier for his bike.

The Over 10 girls winner was Chloe, with Bryce winning the Over 10 boys competition for creative use of tinsel.

“I really enjoyed decorating my bike with the help of my friends,” George said.

A jumping castle entertained the children who were treated to popcorn and fairy floss.

Attendees had the opportunity to browse the array of classic vehicles on display, organised by community members Snow Merrett and Jeffery Pahl.

Entrant Angela Broad’s Torana SLR 5000 and Peter Ryan’s classic vintage Fords impressed onlookers and the pair both received awards.

The talented Penola and District Caledonian Pipe Band silenced the bustling crowd at the event as the group performed cherished traditional tunes.

Organiser Penola and District Business and Tourism Association (PADBATA) president Eleanor Burrow said the turn-out for the event was outstanding with a great atmosphere and attractions for all to enjoy.

“Something that really impressed me was the politeness of the children, they all waited patiently and used their best manners and we had no issues at all,” Ms Burrow said.

She said it was fantastic to see the community come together and support the all ages event.

“I was very proud to be a part of this community,” Ms Burrow said.
