ART CLASS: Limestone Coast residents have taken up the creative challenge of several workshops hosted by the South East Arts Society.

THE South East Art Society is looking to expand its workshop repertoire to help nurture Limestone Coast artists and is calling for talented individuals to pass on their knowledge.

The society – which has served members for 53 years – has a diverse range of beginner and intermediate art classes currently under way.

Situated at the Old Stables on Suttontown Road, the society has swang its doors open to Limestone Coast artists to help foster their talents.

Society president Kaye Ballintyne said learning new skills was the initial reason she joined the community-run society.

“When the opportunity to have someone come and teach we jumped on board with it and it is lovely to see the stables so vibrant and in such good use,” Ms Ballintyne said.

“Not everyone is into sport or good at sport and so to have that creative outlet is so important in small country towns.

“There are a lot of very creative people out there and it seems to be they do art in school and then that finishes and they never pick it up again.”

Ms Ballintyne said art fostered important skills such as problem-solving and could be therapeutic.

“There are a lot of people who crave to do something creative so having these classes allows for that to happen,” she said.

“It benefits the whole town really because it just makes the town so much more vibrant and brings people alive which is also good for the tourist industry as well to be seen as a vibrant and artistic town.”

The society president said classes were already attracting a diverse demographic of attendees.

“At the moment we are running a pastel workshop, drawing workshop and a painting workshop for beginners and intermediates,” Ms Ballintyne said.

“We are in need of teachers however and we would love to run more workshops later down the track.”

The society will host an open day on March 28 with attendees able to speak to teachers regarding the classes and view some of the artwork on display.
