Students inspired to explore natural world

TENISON Woods College students immersed themselves in all things nature last month when they received a special visit from the South Australian Museum.

Supported by The Wood Foundation and Beach Energy, the museum’s Out of the Glass Case program covered an array of interactive and educational workshops.

“Our aim will inspire students to take an interest in the natural world and sciences and to ensure they are exposed to the many different areas of science,” program facilitator Leeanne Bloomfield said.

Workshops students were able to participate in during the visit included Marvelous Monotremes, Mighty Microscopes, Art Meets Science, learning about owl pellets and creative badge making.

South Australian Museum scientific illustrator volunteer Jenny Thurmer also led students in an interactive science illustrations activity.

“The program is fantastic as it involves students creating something and then in turn talking about it, which develops a discussion about the museum at home,” Ms Bloonfield said.

During the tour of the region, the museum team visited Mary MacKillop Memorial School, Kalangadoo Primary School and Nangwarry Primary School.
