Feature film brings paintings to life

WORLD FIRST: The world’s first painted feature film, Loving Vincent, brings the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to life. The film will be screened at the Main Corner at 12pm on May 20.

THE first-ever painted feature film, bringing the paintings of Vincent van Gogh to life, will be screened at the Main Corner on May 20.

Loving Vincent, written and directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, tells the remarkable story of arguably one of history’s most recognisable artists.

The film was first shot in live action, with actors later hand-painted over frame-by-frame in oils.

The final effect is an interaction of the actors playing van Gogh’s famous portraits.

“Combining both art and film, the Main Corner is the ideal venue as the home of the Riddoch Art Gallery and we would love the community to join us for this free screening,” Main Corner coordinator Talie Teakle said.

The film took more than six years to make and features 65,000 moving paintings by 125 artists from 20 different countries, telling the story of van Gogh.

“We think this would be of particular interest to art lovers which is why the Main Corner as the cultural hub of Mount Gambier is the perfect location for this film,” Ms Teakle said.

“The Kings Floor at the Main Corner offers the full cinematic experience and seats 100 people – bookings are essential as seats are filling up fast.

“After the screening people are welcome to stay and view the behind the scenes footage showing the making of the film.”

Loving Vincent will be screened at 12pm on May 20.
