A RECENT trip the national championships paid dividends for young Limestone Coast cyclist Niel Van Niekerk.

He teamed up with fellow Mount Gambier rider Kai Arbery and Adelaide’s Tayte Ryan to claim the Under 19 team sprint gold medal for South Australia.

To make it somewhat sweeter, Van Niekerk and Arbery’s bikes sported wheels sold by the young cyclist.

Van Niekerk is looking to provide equipment at a cheaper price than can normally be found.

For the last few months he has concentrated on setting up an online business focused around his chosen sport of track cycling.

“A few months ago my dad suggested I should start up a business to do with cycling equipment because it is very expensive,” Van Niekerk said.

“A lot of people have bikes that might be aluminium which are hard to compete on.

“I decided to get equipment and sell it cheaper.

“Even the wheels we use could be up to $2000, where I can sell them for around $800 so they are more affordable.”

Van Niekerk said he has concentrated on the Velo Pro equipment.

He used one of the bikes himself in the recent national titles and hopes to provide more equipment more affordably to more cyclists.

“I sell the Velo Pro equipment, like bars and wheels and other stuff to do with track cycling,” Van Niekerk said.

“My bike is probably lighter than Kai’s, so they are very competitive bikes.

“I have sold a few things so far, like glasses, socks and gloves.

“I hope to get the frames out there a bit more.”
