WARM conditions greeted players at the Port MacDonnell Bowls Club for its men’s and women’s Championship Singles, sponsored by Forty Winks.

With 11 players vying for the men’s title, Adam Wilson had a bye in the first round, then defeated David Beaman and Chris Richards to advance to the final.

Eddie Smith, who also had a bye in the first round, defeated Robert Hutchesson and Terry Seiler to advance to the final.

The final became and intriguing battle, with Wilson and Smith equal on six-all after six ends.

The contest then went shot-for-shot and after 12 ends sat tied at10-all.

Smith then claimed three shots over the following three holes to lead by three.

However, over the next four ends Wilson made a break with eight shots to lead 18-13.

After 22 ends Smith had picked up five shots and trailed Wilson by just one, then took a 24-21 lead by the 26th.

But far from being done, Wilson then claimed four shots to take him to 25 and win the title by one. The women’s Championship Singles attracted six nominations, with Heather Richards defeating Jan Dowdell and Jennie Tilley to make it through to the final.

Sharon Perryman had the bye in the first round, then defeated Roma Henderson to advance to the final against Richards for the second year running

In a close contest Perryman scored two on the first end then Richards scored the next five ends to lead 6-2.

Perryman then gained three singles over the next three ends to trail by one shot, but after 13 ends Richards had opened a margin to lead 13-6.

After 17 ends Richards had a handy lead 17-8, then Perryman won five ends to again trail by one.

However, Richards took control and won the next five ends and claimed the title 25-17.
