Busy week at Mount Gambier Bowls Club

A BUSY week at Mount Gambier Bowls Club began on Wednesday with Open Midweek Pennant Round 7 fixtures.

The Reds played host to cross-town rivals Mount Gambier RSL Red in an exciting contest.

The rink of Diana Harris, Jim Philpott, Kym Jones and Bryan Vorwerk fought hard to secure a 17-16 win.

However, a narrow three-shot win in the other rink gave the visitors a 37-35 victory.

The narrow loss saw the Reds drop to third spot and will now face Mount Gambier RSL Blue in their next match.

Mount Gambier Blue faced visitors Port MacDonnell Blue under the roof at the Bob Cranwell Centre.

Despite a strong effort from Gary Williams, Gary Widdison, Barb Milstead and Ron Cox, who won their rink 33-11, Mount Gambier suffered a 53/48.

Mount Gambier Blue has now dropped to fourth spot and will face Mount Gambier RSL Red in its next game.

Friday Women’s Pennant Round 8 action saw Mount Gambier on the road again to take on Beachport Red.

The rink of Gaylene Leggett, Mavis Edgecumbe, Maria Stabler and Beryl Versluis held on for a 20-18 win but a narrow five-shot loss on the other rink saw Beachport Red take six points with a 38-35 victory.

Despite the loss, Mount Gambier is in second place on the ladder and will look ahead to its Round 9 home clash against Robe.

Saturday’ Open Pennant saw the Division 1 Reds travel down the Bay Road to take on Port MacDonnell.

The windy conditions proved tricky with the home team securing wins on two rinks for a 73-65 victory.

The rink of Neil Blakey, Peter Reppin, Tony Renzi and Greg Carpenter overcame a slow start to gain two points for the visitors with a 29-25 win.

Mount Gambier’s loss saw the Reds drop to fourth and will need to regroup for the Round 9 clash against Mount Gambier RSL Blue.

Mount Gambier Blue played host to Penola and claimed a dominant 90-50 victory.

The rink of Tim Radley, Peter Radley, Kym Jones and Jeff England dominated their opponents for a 34-15 win.

The 12 points helped the Blues move into third spot on the ladder.

The Division 2 team travelled to Naracoorte where they found the hosts in top form with wins on the three rinks.

The overall result ended with a convincing 81-57 win for Naracoorte.

Mount Gambier’s best performers were Milton Chant, Diana Harris, Perria Davis and Leanne Hentschke, who fought all day to suffer a narrow 24-25 defeat.

The result meant the team drops to fifth spot and will now face cross-town rivals Mount Gambier RSL in the next round.

The Division 3 South Red team enjoyed a return to form when they played Millicent Blue in Round 8.

With 2 wins and a draw they secured 11 points in a 75-54 win.

The stars of the day were Malcolm Schwarz, Ross Kilsby, John Kentish and Bob Cranwell, who claimed a convincing 29-17 win.

The rink of Garry Williams, Ron James, Rex Klaasens and Jason Kuring also had a good day with a 23-14 win.

The Blues in Division 3 South travelled to Penola and it was a tough day on the green as the hosts mastered the tricky conditions to secure a 104-48 win.

Mount Gambier battled hard but it was unable to secure any points and will now look ahead to its next game against Mount Gambier RSL Blue.
