Bordertown too good for Mil Lel

BORDERTOWN claimed a comfortable 47-run win at Mil Lel Oval on Sunday in Round 5 of the South East Female Cricket League.

The visitors were sent into bat first and the hosts decision to take the field after winning the toss paid early dividends.

Lydia Megaw found an early breakthrough after Lily Kennett was adjudged LBW in the third over.

At 1/10 Mil Lel was in a strong position early on but Hayley Twigden and Georgina Buick formed a strong partnership as the former retired not out for 13 off 33 deliveries at the halfway point in the innings.

Julie Smith bowled Georgina Buick in the 14th over to leave Bordertown at 2/77 with six overs left.

Buick impressed during her time at the crease as she scored 33 runs, which included five 4’s at a strike-rate of 132.

Ashlyn Knauerhase was the next to go when she was bowled by Megaw for four runs off 28 balls.

After Emily Schutz retired not out with five runs from 14 deliveries, Ada Blackwell was next to the crease but was caught first ball and left the visitors at 4/89 with 11 balls left in the innings.

Bordertown picked up 10 runs off both of the last two overs to post a solid score of 109.

Megaw was Mil Lel’s best bowler as she ended her four-over spell with 2/12, which included a wicket-maiden in the third over.

As Bordertown searched for its second win of the season, Courtney Twigden claimed the first wicket of the innings when Megaw’s shot was caught by Buick.

Smith was dismissed not long after to leave the hosts in an awkward situation at 2/17.

Twigden then claimed the key wicket of Madeline Burley and the hosts were on the back foot at 3/25.

Knauerhase made her impact felt as she picked up three wickets from her two overs to end with figures of 3/6.

Blackwell also chipped in with a wicket before Mil Lel’s top-scorer in the inning – Georgia Little – was run out for 10 runs off 45 balls.

NORTH SPORTSMAN’S 3/130 d NARACOORTE 6/72

The Tigers won by 58 runs over Naracoorte at the picturesque Marist Park to further reinstate their dominance this season.

North Sportsman’s have now won four games from four and are the team to beat this season.

After losing the toss, the hosts were sent into bat first were 2/38 after 8.2 overs but Laura Chester and Fiona Young turned the game on its head with a 92-run partnership which lasted until the final ball of the innings.

Chester scored an unbeaten 46 runs off as many balls, while Young scored 39 runs at a strike-rate of 105.4.

Between them, the duo hit 10 boundaries and helped the Tigers post a very competitive score of 130 batting first.

Ella Boston impressed with the ball for Naracoorte with 1/11 off her four overs at a very economical 2.75 runs per over.

Sile Legoe and Lauren Smart were tasked with opening the batting for Naracoorte and formed a 43-run opening stand before Young found the breakthrough and Smart was adjudged LBW in the ninth over.

Kirra Schultz then bowled Legoe at the end of the 11th over which put the hosts in good stead.

Naracoorte trailed by 78 runs with just 54 balls remaining and it was all downhill for the visitors from there.

Layla McPherson claimed the Tigers’ third wicket at the end of the 14th over then Chester picked up two wickets in three balls to all but seal victory.

North picked up one more wicket before the visitors ended their 20 overs at 6/72.

Legoe top scored for Naracoorte with 19 runs, while Smart was next-best with 10 runs.

Chester backed up her strong performance with the bat with the best bowling figures for her side as she ended with 2/5 off four overs.
