FORECAST rain saw eight players cancel their golf last Wednesday, which did not eventuate.

Despite that, a field of 28 women presented at the Mount Gambier Golf Club to participate in a stroke round.

The round finalised the Medal of Medals, putting competition and the qualifying eight players to take part in the Club Handicap Championship.

The while the rain did not arrive, the weather was windy and the course played fairly, with a lot of run on the fairways, with the tee blocks and pin placements set up well.

Eight players conquered the course by carding 73 nett or better.

Former women’s captain Faye Mainwaring claimed the Division 1 wine with a score of 83-15-68, which will result in the handicapper stepping in.

Mainwaring’s split was 40/43 and she registered nine pars and had only 27 putts for her round.

In second place was Janina Morrison with 92-23-69.

Morrison has hit a purple patch and continues to reduce her handicap, claiming the win last Saturday, then again on Monday at Naracoorte.

Her split was a consistent 46/46.

Once again Lizzie Clements won Division 2, with a score of 109-38-71.

Her split was 55/54 and if her putter had behaved she could have scored much better.

Second place went to club stalwart Lois Harvey with 104-32-72, only just missing out by one shot of the win.

She had a good front nine of 48, but the long and difficult back nine was her undoing.

Four balls were won by Kerry Pedlar, Helen Gregory, Mary Kentish and Kathy Ewer.

The pro shot on the picturesque par 3 eighth hole went to Bernie Jennings with a close shot.

The speciality prizes went to A Grade’s Kerry Pedlar and B Grade’s Janina Morrison.

Meanwhile, 16 women played out a stroke round last Saturday in fine but windy conditions.

Marie Douglas claimed the win with a score of 97-25-72, with a split of 46/51.

Di O’Donnell (96-23-73) came in second on a count-back due to her better back nine, registering 46 on the back and 50 on the front.

Unlucky to miss out on a count-back, Jess Parsons (101-28-73) rounded out the podium, with a split of 49/52.

Players are reminded the AGM will take place on Wednesday, October 19 at 8.30am for election of officers for 2023, followed by an 18 hole stableford event.
