Cool conditions make for tough work

A COLD and windy morning faced 15 pairs of women golfers for a three-person medley stableford competition at the Mount Gambier Gold Club last week, sponsored by former captain, Faye Mainwaring.

The weather did not let up, with heavy rain early in afternoon making high scores tough to come by.

The winning combination was Di O’Donnell (33 points), Helen McIntyre (31) and Carol Davis (29).

The format of the competition was to record on a separate scorecard the best two highest scores of each hole and the winning team recorded 75 points.

Collecting seven points on the third hole helped ensure the win by by just one point.

Jess Parsons (30), Jan Shanahan (38) and Vicki Clark (18) finished runners-up after a strong front nine of 42 points, which included seven points on the eighth hole and two six-pointers on holes five and six.

Captain Jan Shanahan (19 handicap) had the best score of the day, playing two under her handicap.

Third place went to Kathy Ewer (28 points), Di Norman (30) and Helen Gregory (31).

the trio played consistent golf, with splits of 36/36 for their 72 points.

Six balls given out to fourth and fifth placegetters and went to Jane Lamont, Libby Altschwager, Jennette Braun, Andrea Pegler, Lois Harvey and Jill Johnson.

Jess Parsons had an impressive shot on the par 3 eighth hole, just 28cm from the cup.

She registered a birdie to collect four points and three balls for the pro shot.

Second shots on the par 3 six hole for one ball each were A Grade’s Kathy Ewer, B Grade’s Di O’Donnell and C Grade’s Lizzie Clements.

Next Wednesday, August 31 a four-ball-better-ball stableford sponsored by Kerry Pedlar will be contested.

A reminder to all players and other clubs that Mount Gambier’s Open Day will be held on Friday, September 23 in the format of A Grade stroke and nett, off the stick for the SE Championship trophy and stableford for B and C and D grades.

A Veterans competition will be played in conjunction with all other competitions.
