Murphies too tough

Glencoe's Malinda Markiewicz shoots under plenty of pressure from the Kongorong defence.

Kongorong held the home-court advantage for its Mid South East netball Round 8 clash against Glencoe but were unable to get the job done against a tough opposition.

The first quarter saw both sides go hard but the Murphies settled early, moving the ball well and converting accurately.

Glencoe’s Donna Jaeschke was on from the first whistle, working hard with the drive and feeding to Malinda Markiewicz who was accurate under the post.

With the Hawks looking nervous in the first quarter, the Murphies were able to capitalise and take a 14-goal lead to the first break.

The rain intensified in the second term, as did the defensive line-ups for both teams.

Glencoe’s Jenna Paproth and Kongorong’s Sarah Lucas battled hard in the circle, both influential for their respective sides.

The Hawks settled in the second quarter, able to slightly curb the influence of the strong Glencoe outfit but their hard work was not able to convert to the scoreboard, as Glencoe pushed the lead out by a further seven goals at the main break.

The Hawks went into the third quarter with work to do and the defensive pressure lifted all over the court.

Kate Wright worked overtime at wing attack for the Hawks, both offensive and defensive, while Jaeschke continued to control the game at the attacking end for the Murphies.

Sarah Edwards worked hard at goal defence, where she found another gear in the third term to lead the Murphies to outscore the Hawks 21-9.

Both teams continued to fight hard defensively up either end as the conditions did not ease up.

Edwards continued down the defensive end for Glencoe, working overtime for her side whilst Rach Perry and Jaeschke were embroiled in a thrilling contest down the court.

However, it was the Murphies who ran away with the contest in the rain and claimed a well-deserved victory.

Markiewicz and Ashlea Edwards were best for Glencoe, with Perry and Emily Lightbody best for the Hawks.
