Tough ask for cross-border side

IT will not get any easier for Casterton Sandford this weekend when it hosts 2021 Western Border netball runner-up Millicent at Island Park tomorrow.

The Saints looked slick in their comprehensive win over South Gambier in the opening round with their trademark ball movement and relentless defence on show.

Portia McRae and Hannah Nitschke continue to be a strong defensive combination and new face Georgia Clarke applied typical Millicent pressure on the defensive wing.

At the other end of the court Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena pose a daunting threat in goals and with the likes of Lisa Duldig, Daisy Tunkin and Paige Nitschke delivering the ball, it will be a tough day out for Cats’ defenders.

The biggest challenge for the Cats early in 2022 is player unavailability and as they continue to build a new-look A Grade line-up, it is going to take time.

Scarlett Jarrad is the lynchpin of the team in centre and Charlotte Rice looms as a great target for Casterton Sandford’s offensive line with her well-timed moves and strength on the hold.

At the other end, new recruit Tessa Marra will quickly find her feet in the Western Border competition and along with the likes of hard-working junior Ebany Jarrad, will have their work cut out as they take on Sanderson and Verbena.

Makayla Hutchins brings speed to the Cats’ mid-court and Gaby Tomkins will be better for the run after a season on the sidelines, while Caeleigh Humphries is the X factor, who can be called on to fill any spot on court, depending on player availability.

However, it shapes up to be another convincing win for Millicent as the well-polished unit strives to reclaim its crown in 2022.
