Handicapper busy after strong results

IDEAL CONDITIONS: Division 1 runner-up Jennifer Van Rijthoven, Division 1 winner Di Norman and Division 2 winner Rosalie Hunt.

IN perfect golfing weather, the third round of the Mount Gambier Golf Club’s Summer Salver stroke competition was contested by a field of 39 women last week.

A few tricky pin placements but a lot of run on the course saw 14 women play to their handicap or better.

Winning Division 1 (0-24 handicap) was long-time member Di Norman with a score of 87-20-67, six shots under her handicap and the best score she has recorded.

Norman had 46 on the front nine and 41 on the more difficult and longer back.

Carding pars on the hardest holes – 13 and 14 – facilitated her successful scorecard, with the handicapper now sure to adjust her numbers.

Runner-up went to Jennifer Van Rijthoven who played consistently to register splits of 40/40.

Her card showed 80-12-68 with a birdie on the third hole and eight pars overall.

Division 2 (25-45) saw two visitors to the club claim the top two positions.

Millicent’s Rosalie Hunt enjoyed her first outing in the Wednesday competition and recorded 100-30-70.

Her split for the nines was a consistent 50/50.

she will also attract the eye of the handicapper.

Runner-up on a count-back was Dartmoor’s Mardi Bawden who carded 108-38-70, three under her handicap.

Her card included pars on the sixth and 18th holes.

Nine balls were given out in the run down, going to Di O’Donnell, Jill Johnson, Susan Downes, Chris Galpin, Faye Mainwaring, Jane Lamont, Kerry Pedlar, Lorraine Stratford and Carol Davis.

Van Rijthoven claimed the pro shot and three balls as aresult.

The best second shot closest to the pin on the difficult 10th hole went to A Grade’s Kerry Pedlar, B Grade’s Chris Galpin and C Grade’s Jane Lamont.

Meanwhile, a par round on Saturday attracted 21 women on another top day for golf.

Penne Saffin scored 2-up to claim the win, with the back nine to her liking, as her splits of square/2-up suggests.

She also managed a birdie on the eighth hole and three pars overall.

Runner-up was the reliable Faye Mainwaring who registered square on the card.

Consistency framed her card, recording square on both nines and seven pars.
