Much to play for in final minor round

READY FOR FINALS: Mount Gambier Bowls Club's Peter Reppin bowls during the final minor round of Open Pennant competition on Saturday.

THERE was no shortage of pressure on the Mount Gambier Bowls Club’s women’s Friday Pennant Division 2 team, as they ventured to Port MacDonnell chasing maximum points to qualify for finals.

The rink of Barb Butchart, Kerry Pedlar, Maryka Heaver and Beryl Versluis led the way in style to claim an excellent 39-16 win.

The rink of Alison Mitchell, Mavis Edgecumbe, Leanne Hentschke and Jane Calleja had a close game but secured the valuable points with a 26-22 victory.

The overall 65-37 win for eight points ensured fourth spot on the ladder and a match-up with Robe in the semi-final.

Saturday’s Round 14 of Open Pennant action saw the Division 1 Reds host Millicent at the Bob Cranwell Centre.

Millicent needed a win and other results to go their way to avoid relegation but were off to a slow start, as the hosts gained control early on the three rinks.

With the Reds already securing top spot, they continued their good form to win on three rinks for an 86-54 victory.

The best performed rink of John Reppin, Tony Renzi, Greg Carpenter and Tony Bowditch were able to pull away from their opponents to win comfortably 33-17.

The Division 1 Blues travelled across town to take on Mount Gambier RSL Blue needing a drawn rink to secure second spot on the ladder and the double chance in finals, while the hosts needed a win and other results to go their way to qualify for finals.

The point point required was secured by the rink of Tim Radley, Daryl Raneberg, Gary Hocking and Ian Von Stanke who had an exciting 24-24 draw with the Wayne Legutko skippered local rink.

The final result of 83-64 win to the hosts mattered little, with the Blues securing second spot and can now look forward to a semi-final clash with club mates the Reds under the roof.

The Division 2 team played host to Naracoorte RSL and with both teams playing their last game of the year, the 12 points was the only prize.

The visitors found the green to their liking, with wins on all three rinks for a 92-54 victory.

The rink of Milton Chant, Maryka Heaver, Perria Davis and David Babb ensured their opponents had to fight hard for the points to eventually go down 25-33.

Pennant finals began under the roof on Saturday with the Division 4 semi-finals played.

The local Reds hosted the visiting Millicent Reds of Millicent and enjoyed the home green advantage, winning the three rinks for a 85-57 victory.

The stars of the day were the rink of Jane Calleja, Rex Klaassens, Glen Brown and Beryl Versluis who dominated their opponents to win 35-17.

The victory gives the Reds a South Conference grand final spot in two weeks time.

Congratulations to Club Singles Champions Kristy Errock and Tony Bowditch who both made the semi-finals of the Champion of Championships played recently to continue their solid season.
