England and Farrell go back to back

WOMEN'S TRIPLES WINNERS: Barb Milstead, Maryka Heaver and Beryl Versluis.

THE Mount Gambier Bowls Championships Series continued under the roof at the Bob Cranwell Centre with the men’s and women’s triples and pairs rounding it off.

In the women’s triples, the combination of Barb Milstead, Maryka Heaver and Beryl Versluis met the team of Kathy Gray, Leanne Hentschke and Kristy Errock with Versluis’ team claiming the title.

The men’s competition had 12 entries.

The team of Mick Ashby, Gary Hocking and Brad Errock made their way to the final where they met the combination of Peter Radley, Steve Farrell and Jeff England.

The final was played on Friday and, after a tight match, the England team claimed the men’s triples championship.

The pairs championship rounded off the series with the women’s final between Kathy Gray and Diana Harris against Kerry Pedlar and Beryl Versluis with the Harris-led pair becoming the ladies pairs champions.

The men’s pairs had 16 teams enter and, after the preliminary rounds, the team of Jeff England and Steve Farrell met Peter Clark and Jim Philpott in the final.

Philpott’s team got off to a good start with an early lead, only to be caught by England’s team to take out the final in an extra end.

The win not only crowned the England/Farrell combination as pairs champions but also secured back-to-back championships for the duo after teaming up with Peter Radley to claim the triples title the week prior.

PENNANTS

After the championships, the pennant competition continued last Friday, with the women travelling to Millicent.

The rink of Alison Mitchell, Deanna Farrenfield, Kerry Pedlar and Beryl Versluis enjoyed the day to secure a 24-15 win but, with the locals winning the other rink, the Mount Gambier side returned home with a narrow 41-44 loss.

On Saturday under the roof at home, the Division 1 Blues played host to Robe in a match up only three rounds before the finals.

The locals secured the valuable 12 points with the stars of the day being the rink of Tim Radley, Daryl Raneberg, Brad Errock and Ian Von Stanke who enjoyed a 34-18 win over the Peter Roachock led visitors.

The win lifted the Blues into second place and in a good position to secure a double chance in the finals.

The Division 1 Reds travelled to Naracoorte but the locals managed to make up for last year’s Grand Final defeat with a 79-58 victory.

The rink of John Reppin, Tony Renzi, Greg Carpenter and Tony Bowditch were able to secure two points with a 21-20 win over their opponents.

The two points were enough to ensure the Reds will finish the season on top and host the semi finals at the Bob Cranwell Centre.

In Division 2, the Mount Gambier team won all three rinks for an impressive 86-50 win against the Naracoorte visitors.

The rink of Milton Chant, Maryka Heaver, Perria Davis and David Babb recorded a 35-9 win over the Deane Williams led visitors, giving the hosts the 12 points and lifting them away from the relegation zone.

The Division 4 Reds were home to cross town rivals Mt Gambier RSL Blue and sent the visitors home without any points.

Victories on all three rinks for the 80-56 win secured the valuable 12 points which helped lift them to the top spot on the ladder with two rounds to be played.

The best rink of the day were Kathy Gray, Ray Hutchesson, Diana Harris and John Kentish who dominated their opponents for a 30-18 win.

The Blues in Division 4 travelled to Millicent to play the local Blues and battled hard, winning one rink to eventually lose 75-65.

The rink of Neville Gilbertson, Eddie Otter, Ross Kilsby and Don Fraser were able to secure two points with their 28-24 win.
