Up at the Links: Quirky combination take out Ambrose event

SATURDAY’S competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club was a two-man Ambrose with a field of 45 teams.

Neil Quirk and Peter Miller were the best combination on the day as they posted a nett 60.75 to win by the slim margin of a quarter of a point.

This score was good enough to win them both a $60 voucher, with Jack Jennings and club professional Craig Davis posting a solid 61 to finish in second.

In third place was the pairing of Michael Rookas and Stacey Fiegert, but only after a count back from three other teams on nett 62.

Teams needed 65 nett or better to win a ball and winners for the day included Ryan Meakin, Matt Bryant, Bryan Hunt, Gary Button, Ben Robinson, Samuel Phelan, Joe Clements, Matthew

Knowles, David Anderson, Michael Griffiths, Trent Eitzen, Brian Simmonds, Adrian Ballintyne, John Gosling, Jim Leane and Rob McIntyre.

The pro-shot on the 16th went to Gary Button and Dave Boyce grabbed the shot-of-the-day honours for the second time in as many weeks on the eighth.

Women’s two-man Ambrose

WITH only one team of women, the pairing of Marie Douglas and Di O’Donnell took home an easy victory, with their final score of nett 75.

Thursday Stableford

PERFECT weather and course conditions greeted competitors last Thursday, with high scores expected for the day’s stableford competition.

In the end it was the young Thomas Miles who produced the goods with a score of 46 points to win C Grade and the day.

School holidays and long summer evenings have meant many young members are shedding strokes off their games almost by the hour.

It will not be long before Miles is frustrating the B Grade instead, with the young gun’s form ever-improving.

David Anderson took second place for the day with a fine 43 points, while Burt Van Nispen rounded out the top three with 41.

Trent Eitzen and Peter Collie made up the top five, as they both made the 40-point mark.

Players required 38 points to win a ball, except for the blessed Sam Mainwaring who slips through as the best of the 37’s.

Real winners included, Duncan Savage, Darren Harding, Graham Allen, Daryl Morgan, Ross Bond, Patrick Dempsey, Greg Hudson, Lyndsay Copeman, Graham Greenwood, Samuel Phelan, Des Guerin, John Shirley, Travis Younghusband, Brian Ashby, Graham Thomas and David Bruhn.

The field of 100 produced only 14 birdie twos from the 400 attempts.

Those managing the feat included, Seth McRae, Setio Shanahan, Toby Jarrett, Malcolm Treloar, John Leerson, Peter Buckingham, Greg Hudson, John Shirley, Copeman, Van Nispen, Eitzen, Bond, Phelan and Anderson.

Setio Shanahan claimed the pro-shot on the 16th, while Lyndsay Copeman took the shot-of-the-day honours on the eighth.
