HALLOWED TURF DRAWCARD: North Sportsman’s Cricket Club will look to advance to the next round of the Country Living Homes Twenty20 cricket competition at Penola on Sunday, with the chance to play on the Adelaide Oval a big drawcard for the series.

McCORQUINDALE Park will be a hive of activity on Sunday when the Country Living Homes Twenty20 competition hits town.

North Sportsman’s will face Millicent, followed by Naracoorte and Bordertown, with the winners playing off in the afternoon for the right to advance to the next round.

That will take place in Langhorne Creek, with the Adelaide Oval the carrot at the end of the competition.

In recent years the overall winner of the country competition faced the city counterpart at the iconic stadium, with this year the country grand final will take place on the hallowed turf.

But first one of the four teams must win on the Sunday to have a chance to make that final game of the series.

Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association president George Kidman said the day would provide some quality cricket for anyone interested in venturing up to Penola.

“Anyone can win this,” he said.

“Millicent has done very well in this competition before, toppling West Gambier and going through.

“But North Gambier has not lost a game of cricket for two years and will be favourites going in.”

Which ever association goes through will face an even tougher test in the next round.

“It is a tough draw for the southern zones,” Kidman said.

“You go to Langhorne Creek and play against two very strong Fleurieu teams, as well as the Riverland.

“It is no easy feat.”

While the team that qualifies top in the southern region also has the chance to play in the T20 carnival at Warrnambool, which offers a decent prize pool, Kidman said it would be hard to knock back playing on the Adelaide Oval, should they reach that final stage.

But firstly he said this weekend would provide a chance for a big day of cricket, with games running concurrently from 10am.
