State team dominates

UNDEFEATED: South Australian men’s Senior Sides team manager Peter Mueller, Port MacDonnell’s Heather Richards, Keith’s Geoff Hams and Bordertown’s Di Murch celebrate the men’s 2017 Senior Sides Championships victory after the event.

THE Bowls Australia 2017 Australian Senior Sides Championships were held recently in the Yorke Peninsula.

With the competition a major mark on the national bowls calendar, South Australia secured the men’s title at the prestigious event.

The men’s team was unbeaten as it secured its maiden Australian Senior Sides title at the Moonta Memorial Bowls Club and Wallaroo Bowls Club last week.

South Australia won six and drew one of its matches to wrap up the tournament on the penultimate day, before closing with a 55-46 triumph over NSW.

Peter Gaglear’s rink finished up with five wins and +61 shots and Ken Holtham’s team secured four victories and +36, while Col Harvey’s rink had four wins, +21 shots.

Last year the side came second by a small margin, but this year it got over the line.

This victory followed South Australia’s first Australian Sides title in 29 years in April and last month’s overall boy’s trophy at the National Under 18 Championships.

The state’s women’s team finished sixth in the Senior Sides Championships, with Heather Richards (3 wins, +38 shots), Kerry Treloar (3 wins, +27) and Denise Caulfield (1 win, -59 shots) skippering the three rinks.
