THE K&S Fuels Footballer-of-the-Week rewards a player for a variety of reasons, whether a best-on-ground performance or a major milestone.

Today we look at another young rising star working his way into the senior ranks of the Western Border Football League.

It is not uncommon in the region, with plenty of youngsters making their name.

You only have to check out the Murray South East team heading off this weekend to contest the South Australian Country Championships, with several of the Under 21 players – with the team needing up to six selected – able to make the side on their football merit alone.

However, this week is all about South Gambier which claimed a hard-fought victory over West Gambier on the weekend.

Speaking to coach Heath Mitchell after the game suggested he was more than pleased with his young brigade, who have stood tall and found their feet alongside the experienced stars.

In a roster that was depleted in the off-season, it was important Mitchell had enough talent to work with.

While he said his top-six players were as good as any in the competition, he also noted it was more important for the younger players coming through to make their mark and work alongside the established stars to ensure success this year.

Mitchell rattled off several young names, all having decent statistics for the game, but it was Dylan Ridding who claims the honours this week.

While some of his other young team mates had plenty of possessions as well, Ridding managed six marks and finished off with two timely goals for his side.

In the end the Demons won the game by just 16 points, making his contribution on the scoreboard even more important.

Should the trend continue at South, there will be plenty of success to come as the young stars learn their craft from some of the best in the business.
