Choral society lives on

After sharing fears they might fold, enough new members have joined the Mount Gambier Choral Society to see the group continue.

The society called out for new members prior to their annual general meeting (AGM), held February 27, which saw incumbent president Cathryn Rochow re-elected.

Ms Rochow said she was happy to see the committee full, after having members take on several roles in previous years.

“I was pleasantly pleased and surprised that we were able to finally within the group make up a full committee, which we need to support what we do,” she said.

“Those official positions have to be done, you just don’t get anywhere with one person doing everything.”

She said the group would now continue strong with a “mixed bag” of 12 members.

“It’s very interesting to see where people have come from and I think most people were singers already,” she said.

“There were some lovely people who came along and they were all wanted to contribute.

“We go from a 10-years-old up to I don’t know how old, so it doesn’t matter about your age, if you want to come and join in you are most welcome.”

With a now strong membership Ms Rochow said the society was looking forward to their 2024 schedule and hoped to hold on till 2033 to celebrate their 100th birthday.

Ms Rochow said the society would like to see a pianist join the group and “add a cherry on top”.

“They don’t have to be opera standard, chords are fine,” she said.

“We are working at the moment with Michael Walsh a lovely guitar player, his skill is very good, but we would love to go back and do piano work.”
