Pride awareness video shared

A MESSAGE of pride and equality is being spread across the Glenelg Shire thanks to the creative efforts of local youth.

Youth diversity group Skittles has recently launched their own local pride awareness video, Portland Pride, across social media networks exploring the themes of inclusion, identity and acceptance in regional communities.

Skittles group facilitator and youth development officer Cathryn Walder said the video hoped to promote and celebrate diversity.

“Portland Pride is part of an innovative campaign by the Skittles group to help spread the message of love and equality throughout the community,” she said.

“The video was filmed during the first ever Portland Pride event in 2017 and features many recognisable faces reflecting on what love and equality means to them, and how they best support those around them who may be struggling with their identity.”

Ms Walder said the video had already reached prominent equality advocates.

“Skittles members were fortunate enough to show the video to the Victorian Commissioner for Sexuality and Gender Rowena Allen when she visited the Glenelg Shire in late 2017,” she said.

“The commissioner was incredibly supportive of the concept and thanks to her words of encouragement the group is now confident to showcase their work across social media.

“In what can only be described as a credit to the dedication of the group, the commissioner has also agreed to take part in a future Skittles film, so make sure you keep an eye out for a follow up flick in the near future.”

Portland Pride can be viewed via The Glenelg Shire Youth Facebook page.
