Archery: Twilight shoot-off

ON TARGET: Phil Tremelling was all smiles after he struck his first all-gold end since swapping from a compound bow to a recurve bow.

TWILIGHT often has the calmest conditions of the day and Blue Lake archers took advantage of that last Friday, the first twilight round since last summer.

A 72 arrow event had previously been created to fit into the narrow time frame before dusk and was dusted off and offered to any members able to attend.

The three archers on the range were not disappointed by the conditions and were pleased with the scores achieved.

Ben Kilsby notched up and impressive 658 points off-the-bow, but his adjusted score was eclipsed by Paul Freeman, who had exceeded the benchmark by a staggering 59 points.

Sunday afternoon was surprisingly mild for the club’s normal outdoor event, the scheduled 90 arrow Melbourne round proving to be a fairly relaxed round for the conditions.

Six archers were active on the main range and a keen beginner on the practice range.

Kilsby continued where he left off Friday, quickly accumulating the best off-the-bow score as Freeman also powered on.

Phil Tremelling’s return to the recurve bow was showing big gains, landing scores to rival the two compound bow archers sharing his target.

An all-gold end finally fell Tremelling’s way after a couple of close calls in recent matches.

The final arrows were scored and handicap margins applied to the off-the-bow scores.

The adjusted results showed the mid pack was a tight contest, with only eight points separating Kilsby, Graham Lock and Len Bayley and only a few more points back to Garry Jacques.

At the leading end of the field it was a two horse race, with Freeman and Tremelling the standout archers on the day.

Both exceeded the benchmark 900 points and Freeman landed a new personal best.

Tremelling had another achievement to celebrate as he had broken Freeman’s remarkable run to claim the day’s win, leading Freeman home by nine points.
