ROUND 2 of Limestone Coast Women’s Football kicked off on Sunday at Malseed Park, with some teams beginning to settle into the 2018 competition.

Following its substantial victory over North Gambier last week, Millicent was less active in the goal square this round, but was still able to claim a 15-point win over Glencoe in the first game of the day.

This was followed by a 30-point win for South Gambier, as it redeemed itself from last round’s loss with a victory over East Gambier.

Kybybolite has proven it will definitely be a team to watch this season, as it backed up its triumph over defending champions South with a convincing win against Kalangadoo.

The final game for the day saw a close tussle between West and North, with the match resulting in a draw.

Millicent 2.4-16 d Glencoe 0.1-1

THE opening match of the day saw Millicent continue to impress, this time with a closer 15-point margin over the Glencoe All Stars.

Despite the All Stars providing more resistance than the Tigers did last week, the Saints were still able to hold their opponent scoreless until the final term.

With a major and a minor in the first quarter, Millicent was off to a strong start as it went into the break seven points up.

However, a stalemate was reached in the second term and the scores were left unchanged at half time.

Millicent managed another major and minor score after the long break and went into the final term with a 14-0 lead.

With Glencoe able to convert just one point before the game’s end, the Saints added another two minor scores to the board to solidify their comfortable win.

Olivia Fuller and Kristie Rowe continued to lead the way on the scoreboard for Millicent, both backing up solid Round 1 performances with a goal each on Sunday.

Roxanne Wallis was named best-on-ground for the Saints and she was joined by Carly Knaggs, Fuller and Hayley Bell, while Jami Walker and Shelby Serle were also commended for their efforts.

For Glencoe, Kate Tomkins had another solid game for her side to lead the way on the best player’s list, while Emma Hartung-Gleeson and Claire Nolte were also among the best.

Round 3 will see games played at McDonald Park, with Millicent to face off against Kalangadoo, while Glencoe will look for a win when it takes on North.

South 4.7-31 d East 0.1-1

SOUTH Gambier reminded spectators why it is the reigning premier on Sunday, with a convincing victory over East Gambier.

A solid first quarter saw the Demons with a major and two minors before the break – a score it replicated in the second term.

Going into the long break with a 16-0 lead, South remained in control of the match in the second half.

The Bulldogs were able to convert one minor score in the third term, but it was far from enough to get them back in the game, as the Demons kicked another two majors and three minors for the match to obtain their eventual 30-point winning margin.

South’s Kendell Saffin made an impact at the goals, kicking two for the match and she was joined by Kate Lehmann and Aimee Beck, who finished with one each.

The best-on-ground honours went to Zoe Duncan on the day, with Imogen Walker, Tess Clark and Claudia Edmonds also contributing well around the field for the Demons.

This Friday will see South up against West for Round 3, while East will need to lift its game if it is to stand a chance against the strong Kybybolite side.

Kybybolite 4.10-34 d Kalangadoo 0.2-2

IT was a team effort which saw Kybybolite in front at the final siren when it took to the oval against Kalangadoo on Sunday.

With as many goal kickers as goals, if the side can continue its solid form it will be a hot contender for the final.

Two majors and two minors in the opening term saw Kyby with an early lead, as Kalangadoo was only able to convert a minor before the first break.

The Magpies doubled their score in the second term to reach their final tally, while their opponent added another goal and three points to the board for a 23-2 half-time margin.

An inaccurate quarter saw Kyby with five minor scores in the third, before it rounded out its score with its fourth major in the final term.

Emma Rasheed, Hayley Smart, Shakira Stuchbery and Sophie Watson contributed a major each for the victors, but it was Tyler Atkinson who claimed the best-on-ground honours.

She was joined by Smart, Melanie Hutchesson and Rasheed as the best on the day.

For the Magpies, Bianca Thorn was named as best, along with Chloe Long, Kylie Schultz and Narelle Ryan.

The upcoming round will see Kalangadoo test its strength against Millicent, while Kyby will look to continue its form when it takes on the East Gambier hosts.

West 1.1-7 dw North 1.1-7

THE closest match of the round saw West and North split the points at the Roos’ home venue.

West’s Tayarrah Morris opened the scoring in the first term with a goal, but unlike the previous round, the Tigers were able to answer this score through Lorrelle Walker in the second quarter.

Going into half time with a goal apiece, the struggle to break away continued with the resume of play.

With both sides kicking a minor in the third term, this was how the scores would remain until the siren.

A scoreless final quarter saw the game finish with seven points each, leaving North with its best result to date.

Along with her goal, Walker was named as best-on-ground for the Tigers, with Samantha Scott, Ella Firth and Kimberly McKinnon also among the top performers.

Cody Millard was the best for the Roos and Morris was named second, while Emma Lynch, Darcie Kuhl and Mikaylah Hamson also earned a mention for their efforts.

West will hope to lift its game when it goes head-to-head with the Demons this week, while North will continue its quest for a win when it clashes with Glencoe.

GOING DOWN: Millicent’s Kristie Rowe ends up on the receiving end of a tackle from Glencoe’s Libby Howe-Morgan during their Round 2 clash at Malseed Park on Sunday.
