THE former St John Ambulance building on Penola Road was demolished this month, ending the service’s 50-year affiliation with Mount Gambier’s Frew Park.
Mount Gambier City Council resolved to demolish the building last July after exploring a number of options for the site.
Council chief executive officer Mark McShane told The Border Watch the building was “beyond its useful life”.
“The building would have required significant and expensive repair,” Mr McShane said.
He said council had yet to formally resolve how the vacant space would be used.
“One option council will consider is transforming the site into a car park for longer vehicles, trailers, motor homes and caravans to allow access to the city,” Mr McShane said.
The building was the former site of the city’s ambulance service prior to its move to Sturt Street.
