Regional bowling competition heats up

Division 1: Naracoorte 47/14 d Mount Gambier RSL Red 37/0

IT was a day Mount Gambier RSL Red would rather forget, going down to Naracoorte by 10 shots overall.

Jane Crowder, Val Anderson, Jenny Waugh and Veronica Opie jumped away to a strong early lead, but allowed their opponents, Chris Johnson, Jenny Measday, Sue Bennett and Di Brown to score several multiples close to the lunch break.

Each of Brown’s four lifted when play resumed, while RSL Red struggled to find their range.

Opie’s team lost to Brown’s 22-27.

Jenny Bowering, Beryl Messenger, Glenda Dalton and Maryke Heaver played Sue Drogemuller, Ruth McInnes, Fay Vogel and Chris Murphy.

RSL Red trailed early, but by the break had narrowed the gap to four shots.

They battled hard after the break, however they were unable to bridge the gap, going down 15-20.

Division 1: Mount Gambier RSL Blue 47/4 dw Port MacDonnell 47/7

A NAIL-BITING draw was the result when Mount Gambier RSL Blue played host to Port MacDonnell.

After both RSL rinks led early, they were unable to fully capitalise and eventually shared the points, seven apiece.

Kym Franklin, Mike Smith, Nancye Wilson and Karen Doman won 16 of the 25 ends and dominated their game against Barb Milstead, Jan Dowdell, Carol Schmidt and Joy Bilney to eventually win 31/20.

Merna Whitehead, Fleur Roachock, Shirley Gifford and Kath Hearne went to lunch 14-10, but were overwhelmed by the bowling of Sharon Perryman, Bill Richards, Jennie Tilley and Judy Grosvenor after the break.

The RSL Blue team scored just two singles, while Grosvenor’s team added 17 shots in the rink’s 16-27 loss to the visitors.

Division 2: Mount Gambier RSL 44/13 d Naracoorte 31/1

DESPITE draws on two rinks, Mount Gambier RSL was able to clinch the victory over Naracoorte.

Kath MacIntosh, Linley McDonald, Helen Moulden and Lyn Chirgwin had a seesawing battle against Lynette Williams’ team, drawing with 21 shots each.

Chirgwin’s team led by nine shots after the 12th end, but were over-run in a persistent challenge from Naracoorte.

The RSL fought back by winning the last four ends to salvage a draw.

Nancy Horrigan, Carmel McQuade, Barb Smith and Eileen Cruise restricted Naracoorte to just singles for the entire game to win against Coralie Alchurch’s four with a final score of 23-10.

Division 3: Mount Gambier RSL 54/14 d Port MacDonnell 33/0

MOUNT Gambier RSL notched up its second win with a strong performance at home against Port MacDonnell.

Phillip Wilson, Bob Solly, Keisha Pearson and Lola McKenzie combined well and were unstoppable against Cheryle Dodridge’s team to record their 32-14 victory.

Bev Famularo, Bob Milligan, Edna Eldridge and Marg Finnis withstood a late challenge from Colleen Tarca’s team to also win 22-19.

Open Pennant 

Division 1: Mount Gambier RSL Red 99/16 d Lucindale 50/0

WITH the Mount Gambier RSL Red side now at full strength, all three rinks fired together for a 49-shot win over Lucindale in Round 3 of Lower South East bowls’ Open Pennant on Saturday.

Robert Corner, Deane Wilkinson, Chris Waugh and Andy Ashby led all the way against Eric Pitt’s four to win 30-17.

In his first game as skipper in Division 1 Red, Rex Heins directed his team of Jason Kuring, Peter Roachock and Neil Tobin to a 31-19 victory against Rod Willmott’s four, while Jamie Lambert,

Michael Fox and Graham Ellis were the best overall performers with a 38-14 win over Geoff Smith’s four.

Millicent 83/14 d Mount Gambier RSL Blue 70/2

MOUNT Gambier RSL Blue is still searching for its first win in the Open Pennant competition after going down to Millicent in a hard-fought game on Saturday.

At the start of the 12th end RSL Blue led by 16 shots overall, before Millicent turned the tables in a matter of five ends.

The score see-sawing to the finish, Millicent collected some big numbers to prevail.

Fiona Pearson, Ian MacIntosh, Gary Feast and Strawb Masters were the only four to win with a final score of 29-26.

Division 2: Mount Gambier RSL Red 82/16 d Penola 58/0

A VICTORY to Penola made it three wins from three outings for Mount Gambier RSL Red.

The team of Simon Attiwill, Gary Fox, Ron Edlington and Wayne Legutko were the best performers with an impressive 32-14 victory, while Des Moulden’s team won 25-23 and Noel Miller’s won 25-21.

Kingston 68/13 d Mount Gambier RSL Blue 65/3

DESPITE having its fair share of chances Mount Gambier RSL Blue fell three shots short when playing Kingston on the road.

Brenton Wittwer, Harry Childs, Karen Doman and Ben Masters won their rink 23-19, while Dave O’Donnell’s team drew 25 shots apiece.

However, it was John Spehr’s four who lost 17-24, which resulted in the eventual defeat.

Division 3: Mount Gambier RSL Red 92/16 d Port MacDonnell’s 58/0

MOUNT Gambier RSL Red again signalled its strength in Division 3 with a percentage-boosting 34-shot victory over Port MacDonnell.

Playing at home, the result was never in doubt.

John Preece, Roy Montgomery, Kevin Stafford and Bob White had the largest winning margin, 36-13.

Mount Gambier RSL Blue 68/14 d Mount Gambier 61/2

The Mount Gambier RSL Blue side managed its first win when it defeated Mount Gambier by seven shots.

David Klem’s four won by five shots as did Les James’ team.

They covered the three-shot loss on the third rink.

Anniversary Open Fours

A TOTAL of 22 teams from Port MacDonnell, Mount Gambier, Robe, Naracoorte, Dartmoor and Millicent as well as the Mount Gambier RSL played in the Open Anniversary fours in cool conditions on Sunday.

The teams played three games of 12 ends, one before lunch and two after.

The Mount Gambier RSL side comprised of Jason Kuring, Tim Wrightson, Chris Waugh and skipper Michael Fox claimed the overall win with 82 points.

They were closely followed by another Mount Gambier RSL team of John Robinson, Jim Cruise, Ian MacIntosh and skipper John Spehr on 80 points.

Third place went to Mount Gambier’s Gary McIntyre, Christy Errock, Tony Bowditch and skipper Brad Errock with two wins and a draw.

Mount Gambier RSL Club president Neil Tobin presented each team with their prize envelopes.

B Grade Singles Champion

JASON Kuring claimed the Mount Gambier RSL and District Bowling Club B Grade Singles Champion honours for the 2017-18 season.

Kuring won through the qualifying rounds in convincing form, defeating Laurie Franklin, Dougie McPhail and then Harry Childs.

His opponent, Brenton Wittwer overcame more experienced opposition to defeated Rick Fallaize, Phillip Wilson and Ben Masters.

The championship game was a nail-biter as both players won admiration from club members for their fine draw bowling.

Wittwer edged a little in front before having one poor end that allowed Kuring to score four shots.

After a great game, the scores were tied on 24-all.

Kuring put an early bowl close and Wittwer was unable to respond, which allowed him to take the championship 25-24.
