THE Coonawarra wine industry recently celebrated two of its outstanding members with Michelle Stehbens and Bruce Redman named patrons of the Coonawarra Vignerons.

The honour was bestowed upon the pair at the recent Coonawarra Vignerons Cup day, acknowledging their contributions to Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated (CGWI) and the wider community.

CGWI president Pete Balnaves said the association had long felt the need to highlight the work the individuals had done for the organisation and the community.

“Truly worthy of this accolade, both Michelle and Bruce epitomize a ‘can do’ attitude with little fuss and fanfare and demonstrating plenty of professionalism and are ambassadors of the Coonawarra wine region,” he said.

Ms Stehbens and Dan Redman, on behalf of his father Bruce who was absent, received a badge commemorating the patron honour.

Ms Stehbens thanked CGWI for the recognition which she said was an “honour”.

“A thank you must also go to Katnook Estate, my employer for nearly 25 years, who supported my work for the Vignerons over this time,” Ms Stehbens said.

“Coonawarra has been my home for over 37 years and I hope I have contributed in some small way to the betterment of the vignerons community and to the Coonawarra and Penola region.

“The recognition of that service is very much appreciated.”

Despite being a long-serving member of many of the region’s prominent organisations, Mr Redman was completely surprised to be named a patron.

“Many of the best ideas have come late in the evening, after a few glasses of premium Coonawarra red and much robust discussion,” he said.

“I must admit that on some of these occasions there were ideas which were not acted upon as the following morning the participants could not remember what they were.

“Everyone involved in growing grapes, winemaking, marketing and selling Coonawarra wine is in some way an ambassador for our wonderful region.

“I encourage all Coonawarra community members to spread the word about how great Coonawarra is.”
