Driver does time awaiting sentence

A MOUNT Gambier woman has sentenced to six weeks imprisonment has walked free from court after already serving sufficient time in custody for her crimes.

Jacinta Mangion-Campbell, 27, appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court to be sentenced for driving disqualified.

The prosecution said the defendant was stopped by police driving on Truman Street at around 9.45am on October 23.

Checks revealed she was driving disqualified and under the influence of methamphetamine.

The defendant made full and frank admissions to police and said she had been “going through a fair bit”.

The defendant’s lawyer said his client had been living a chaotic lifestyle and her organisation was not the best.

He said she had looked at the Vicroads website before driving, which said her licence had not been disqualified.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson said that was not a reasonable excuse.

“You simply did not make the enquiries that should have been made,” Magistrate Anderson said.

Mangion-Campbell was taken into custody on the day of the offending due to other charges of drug trafficking.

She was held in custody before being granted bail on December 21.

Magistrate Anderson sentenced her to six weeks imprisonment for driving disqualified, which had already been served while held on remand.

She remained on home detention bail pending other matters.
