Residents to cast seaside art votes

BRONZE STATUE: A life-size bronze figure of a fisher returning from sea with a southern rock lobster submitted by internationally acclaimed artists Gillie and Marc.
TUNA ATTRACTION: A proposed six metre tall breaching bluefin tuna made using recycled fishing dinghies submitted by Millicent artist Deon Howell.

RESIDENTS are being urged to cast their vote to choose one piece of public artwork for The Waterfront project at Port MacDonnell.

This follows Grant District Council securing State Government funding to revitalise the Port MacDonnell foreshore.

Council deputy chief executive officer Jane Fetherstonhaugh said The Waterfront would bring to life the concepts, objectives and beliefs identified through community and stakeholder consultation.

She said the project aimed to improve both the quality of life for local residents and visitors, as well as enhancing the economic potential of the township.

A significant element of The Waterfront is the inclusion of public art installation as part of stage one of the project.

Council invited professional artists both locally and interstate to submit concepts for public artwork to be incorporated into The Waterfront.

“We were very happy with the standard of concepts submitted” Ms Fetherstonhaugh said.

“No two were alike and they offered a range of mediums, subjects and designs to choose from.”

The proposed artworks include a six metre tall breaching bluefin tuna, a life-size bronze figure of a rock lobster fisherman and a herd of five limestone seals carved from limestone standing up to 1.7m high.

“It was hard to choose three to put out for community consultation,” Ms Fetherstonhaugh said.

“We had artists from three states submit concepts and we are thrilled two of the final three ended up being local.”

The submissions will be on public display at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex at 7 Charles Street until voting closes on Friday, December 1.
