Mixed results for Port MacDonnell Bowling Club

JUST SHORT: Despite Port MacDonnell’s best efforts Joy Bilney and her side were unable to get the victory on their rink, going down by a solitary shot to Kalangadoo in the Division 1 competition.

Friday Pennant

Division 2: Millicent Red 49/14 d Port MacDonnell 36/0

MILLICENT Red was too strong for Port MacDonnell in Round 2 of the Lower South East Bowling Association’s Friday Pennant competition last week.

Karen Petersen, Justin Brown, Betty Pannell and skipper Robyn Burley had a close match when they met Shirley Thiele, Carol Gibbs, Judy Cheer and Sarah Ross.

Scores were level on three occasions throughout the match.

On the 17th end the score was 13-all, but Millicent Red soon scored a further 10 shots to Port MacDonnell’s four, which resulted in the latter going down 17-23.

On the second rink Port MacDonnell’s Marilyn Sutton, Elaine Pruis, Val Praetz and Roma Henderson had a horror start against Judy Lowe, Ella Pietersma, Merle Stevens and Adrianna Ross.

Port MacDonnell had managed just two singles to Millicent’s 21 after 11 ends of play.

They scored the next three ends to advance to 6-23 by the break.

Returning to the green the Port MacDonnell side scored on the next six ends to trail 17-24.

Port MacDonnell lost 19-26.

Saturday Pennant

Division 1: Port MacDonnell 84/14 d Kalangadoo 53/2

IT was a successful day out for Port MacDonnell in Round 3 of the Saturday Pennant after it defeated Kalangadoo comfortably.

Port MacDonnell won two out of its three rinks, with the losing team going down by just a solitary shot.

Peter Bruhn, Bob Hutchesson, Joy Bilney and Bill Richards played Nick Hunt, Andrew Brooks, Peter Lowe and Graham Casey in a tight encounter.

The game was close all the way through with scores level on the 24th end.

However, Kalangadoo rose to the occasion, winning the game by one.

Greg Fisher, Ron Cox, Heather Richards and Adam Wilson took on Scott Kentish, Darrell Hennessey, Gavin Rowe and Kim Stewart.

The Port MacDonnell side scored a six on the second end to give them confidence.

By the 14th end the score was 19-6 in favour of Port MacDonnell.

Eventually Port MacDonnell finished with a score of 32 to Kalangadoo’s 20.

On the third rink, Wally Tarca, Judy Grosvenor, David Gould and Chris Richards played Andre Carlson, Keith Dowdell, Wayne Dowdell and Trevor Auld.

The match was a one-sided affair with the Port MacDonnell side leading 18-5 after 14 ends.

Kalangadoo bounced back to trail by 10, but then the stronger Bay side went on to win 33-13 by the end of play.

Division 2: Port MacDonnell 90/14 d Robe 82/2

PORT MacDonnell played host to Robe in a tight encounter.

Jennie Tilley, Barrie Schmidt, Robin Bilney and Don McCarthy took on Dean Woodward, Jo Sykes, Peter Gregory and Ken Smith.

A four-end scoring run of 10 shots gave the home team a 26-18 advantage, but Robe did bounce back into the contest only to fall five shots short at the end of the day.

John Broadbent, Chris Wilkinson, Don Forbes and Reg Fisher played Patrick Lynch, Jim Gray, Dean Burgoyne and Errol Jennings in a tough match.

The scores were close on the 14th end, but Port MacDonnell scored four multiples and a couple of singles to be 35-17 up by the 21st end.

Robe had a solid run home, scoring 13 shots to go down 30-35.

The third rink went down, but its score was not available on the time of going to print.

MidWeek Pennant

Port MacDonnell Red 50/14 d Mount Gambier RSL 32/0

PORT MacDonnell Red played host to Mount Gambier RSL is what was a good day for the home team.

Barbara Milstead, Ron Cox, Bill Richards and Heather Richards played against Jennifer Bowering, Barbara Smith, John Heaver and Michael Smith.

Scoring on 16 of the 25 ends the Richards’ led team finished with an 11 point win over Mount Gambier RSL 26-15.

Robin Bilney, Roma Henderson, Kevin Henderson and Joy Bilney played Walter Brown, Carmel McQuade, Maryke Heaver and Veronica Opie.

The match was even until the 12th end where Port MacDonnell started to dominate and finished ahead 24-17.

Naracoorte RSL 71/14 d Port MacDonnell Green 23/0

PORT MacDonnell Green was no match for Naracoorte RSL with the latter claiming a convincing victory.

Des Horrigan, Shirley Taylor, Don Forbes and Val Praetz played Bruce Brodie, Sarah Pretlove, Lyn Brodie and Jon Buckley.

The score was one sided in favour of Naracoorte RSL although Praetz was able to take the shot a few times when down multiples.

Scoring on only 10 ends and being held to single shots on most occasions, the game was in Naracoorte RSL’s favour and as a result it eventually took the win 33-13.

The Lance Fisher led team of Alison Mitchell, Terry Stone and Jean Fisher had a similar fate against Joan Hurn, Peter Haines, Geoff Hurn and Cathy Healey, scoring on only seven ends, while their opponents scored multiples to take the win 38-10.

Social bowls

DARRYL Sims and Barrie Schmidt won the social bowls competition with a score of 52 points and 12 shots up at Port MacDonnell and District Bowling Club last Wednesday.

However, it was not all smooth sailing for the pair with Rod Sutton and Peter Rutherford just behind on 52 points and nine shots up.
