Sisters gain scholarships

STUDY OPPORTUNITIES: Local mental health advocates, sisters Lucy and Kelli Williams, are recipients of the 2017 Stand Like Stone Study Scholarships, and will put the funds towards their studies to help others in the community.

PENOLA sisters and passionate mental health advocates, Kelli and Lucy Williams have been announced as recipients of the 2017 Stand Like Stone Study Scholarships, helping to assist the pair with their future study.

University of South Australia social work student Kelli Williams is in the second year of her degree, and has a goal to provide vital mental health education to the community.

“Following the completion of my degree at the Mount Gambier campus, I would like to provide mental health education in schools and education systems, to help give back to the community,” Kelli said.

“I was excited when I received the news as the funding would help ease my financial strain.

“The money will go towards buying university text books as they can be quite expensive.”

Kelli said she is currently enjoying her four year course, which she is undertaking while working part-time.

Sister Lucy recently completed Year 12 at Tenison Woods College and is eagerly awaiting university offers.

“Depending on my university offers I will hopefully begin studying in Geelong in either psychology or occupational therapy (OT).

She said, like her sister she was passionate about mental health, hence her desire to study psychology and she also enjoyed helping people which is why she would like to study OT.

“I am honoured to receive the scholarship as it will help me with my further studies significantly,” Lucy said.

A total of 42 students with a connection to the Limestone Coast will receive support to achieve their educational goals through the grants.

The recipients will share in $24,850, bringing the total amount distributed in Stand Like Stone scholarships since 2009 to $123,685.
