Golden charity event

FUNDRAISING EVENT: Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group vice chair Richard Harry and Mount Gambier Racing Club president John Fartch.

CITY residents are urged to gather trackside tomorrow to raise funds and awareness in the fight against prostate and breast cancer at the 2018 Scott Group of Companies Gold Cup Carnival charity luncheon.

Held in the upstairs members area of the Mount Gambier Racing Club, the event is expected to attract over 100 people as they bid on a selection of items in an auction and raise funds for research and necessary equipment to help those going through the cancer journey both locally and nationally.

With a whip signed by Michelle Payne and tickets to the Rocky Horror Picture Show among the many auction items, Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group vice chair Richard Harry said it will be a fun and interesting day.

“The chap that bought Jim Cassidy’s silks that were signed by Michelle Payne at the last event here is very interested in the whip and, seeing as he will not be able to be there in person, will be on the phone for the auction placing bids,” he said.

“There will also be a steer up for auction once again, which is something you do not really expect to see at the races.”

Already raising thousands of dollars over the years, Mr Harry said the charity luncheon was a great opportunity to help support people in the community going through a challenging period.

“These fundraisers have certainly helped the local breast cancer support group purchase a lymphoedema machine and as for prostate cancer that has always been specified for research,” he said.

However, Mr Harry said it was not all about raising money with former Australian rules footballer and prostate cancer ambassador David Parkin set to make an appearance as a guest speaker to help raise awareness.

“We only have to help one person and we have won anyway, whether that is a fella or a lady going to get themselves checked, it does not matter,” he said.

“That has always been our main message.”

The charity luncheon will take place tomorrow from noon to 4pm at the Mount Gambier Racing Club.

A free bus will leave the South Aussie Hotel at noon to the club and return at the end of the event.

Bookings for the luncheon can be made with the Mount Gambier Racing Club by phoning 8725 4466 or going online.
