Top effort at inter-association tournament

SATURDAY saw two Robe teams represent the Lower South East Bowls Association against the Upper South East Bowls Association.

Dean Burgoyne, Dean Woodward, Glenn Wright (filling in for Stephen Kennett) and skip Harold Manton played against Rob Galbraith, Adam Ashton, Bradley Hicks and skip Anthony Haines and had to play an extra end to win by one shot.

Josh Waddell and skip Jim Gray played against Mike Lawless and skip Kevin Munro and with the scores level for the third time on the 13th end won the last two ends to win 16 shots to 14. Social bowls last Thursday was again sponsored by Ross and Lorraine Dening, with vouchers from The Robetown Chocolate Factory up for grabs.

There were 25 players, with two visitors from Waikerie and one from Leeming WA who played two games of two-bowl triples and three-bowl pairs.

Four teams won both their games, but the winners on 56 points were Rob Lawrie and Paul Truelove.

Runners-up, both on 51 points, were Robbie Dahler and Dean Burgoyne, along with Josh Waddell and Stephen Kennett.

Saturday was the State of Origin, sponsored by Judy and Adrian Bermingham.

The Robe v Mortlake competition saw the latter turn the tables and win the day.

Three games of 2x4x2 were played and the winners on 77 points were Darren Grant and Colin Goldsworthy, ahead of George Draffen and a handy ring in from WA, Aubrey on 75.5.

The overall winner Mortlake finished on 341.5 points to defeat Robe on 333.5.

Sunday the Men’s Triples tournament was held, sponsored by Mark Murphy and Errol and Valma Jennings.

A field of 16 teams competed and enjoyed a great day of bowls.

Wayne Ross, Brad Errock and Daniel Langdon claimed the win with 86.5 points, from Draffen, Colin Goldsworthy and Clive Baxter on 84.5 and three wins.

Jim Philpott, Graham Crowder and Jeff England had two wins and a draw to round out the podium on 71.5 points.

The end of year presentations and AGM will be held on Sunday April 28.

Those playing are asked to put their names in by 12.30pm for a 1pm start and bring a plate of afternoon tea.

Members are asked to wear their uniforms.
