PENOLA – v WEST GAMBIER 9/264

ONLY one Barber Shield match will kick off at the start of the second innings on Saturday.

Entering Day 2 of their Round 10 clash, Penola will chase a daunting target on its home deck after West Gambier posted a score of 264 runs last week.

Michael Waters stood tall with the ball despite the Roos’ batting prowess and he will look to back up his five-wicket haul with a strong batting effort.

Waters has been the most consistent Eagle this season and much will hinge on his performance.

The same could be said of Jack Mullan, who is likely to open with the bat.

He has had some highlights throughout the year and will want that to be the case again this week.

Lewis March and Drew Clayfield are others to watch, while down the order the likes of Matthew Honner and Joshua Doyle had good batting performances in Round 9.

Despite some talent, the Eagles will be clear underdogs.

West’s batting talents are complemented by bowling proficiency and it will be a tough day for the hosts.

Last week the Roos had just two players not make double-figures and will be equally confident in their bowlers.

Justin de Jong, captain Bray Stephenson, Sujith Nikethana and Shane de Jong are all ones to watch.

Sam Willis is also due a big haul after an impressive start to the season.

Throw in Bailey Rothall who has proven capable as well and West is well placed to keep the Eagles under thumb.
