PENOLA 21.10 (136) d NANGWARRY 0.0 (0)

IT was a weekend of big margins in the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League.

Round 5 of the season was contested over two days and venues, with Friday night kicking things off at Kybybolite.

The first clash of the night had Penola post the biggest win for the round, when defeating Nangwarry 136-0.

Once again it was Angela Broad who topped the scoresheets, with her five goals leading the Eagles on their way to the largest score of the season so far.

A five-goal opening term put Penola in a good place at the first change, before seven more majors followed in the second quarter.

That gave the Eagles a 75-point advantage at half time and the chances of a Saints’ comeback were slim-to-none.

Heidi Berkin was a standout and her presence was felt for the full four quarters.

She was rewarded with the best-on-ground honours, followed closely by Broad and Chloe McDiarmid.

The trio have been consistently among the best players this season and show no signs of slowing down.

The goals kept coming in the third term and at the final change the margin was out 113.

The Eagles finished off their big night with three-goals-five in the forth to wrap up a 136-0 point victory.

Alice Rainsford also impressed for Penola, as did Amanda and Ivy Wurst.

Berkin’s top performance was complemented by four goals, while Chloe Long had three majors and both Lyndall Feast and Stevie Judd had two each.

Jess Gerritsen was best on ground for Nangwarry in a performance which stood out despite the one-sided nature of the conflict.

Natalia Edwards, captain Ebony Wurst and Melissa Blanck also featured highly among the best players.

KYBYBOLITE 10.10 (70) d MILLICENT 0.0 (0)

The second game at Kybybolite followed a similar script to the first on Friday night and while the home team was slow out of the gates, the northern Tigers cruised to an eventual 70-point win over Millicent.

The hosts scored 1.3 in the first quarter, but that margin grew to 40 points by the main break after a five-goal term.

The Saints were scoreless at that point and would remain in that state until the final siren.

A couple of goals in the third term kept the scoreboard ticking over before a two-goal-four return in the fourth quarter pushed Kyby out to 70 points.

Madeleine Huggins was the standout and took home the best-on-ground honours for the victors.

She popped up with two goals as well, second only to Taylor Ryan’s four-goal effort.

Ryan also made it into Kyby’s best, joined by Kate Edmonds, Amelia Frick, Dellie Brown and Tahlia Barnett.

Despite not hitting the scoreboard, there were some highlights for Millicent.

Isabelle Wilson was one of these and she was named best on ground for her performance.

A regular among the best in Chloe Gronn also had her moments, while Kallie Brown, Emily Walker and Lana Shepherd rounded out the best players.

KONGORONG 10.2 (62) d SOUTH GAMBIER 1.2 (8)

Turning attention to Sunday’s fixtures and the margins were of similar proportions.

Kongorong opened the day at Mundulla with a 54-point win over South Gambier, proving the Hawks should find themselves in the middle-order of the competition again.

The first quarter was somewhat of an arm wrestle with a single score at either end.

However, the Hawks entered the break with a four-point advantage thanks to their shot finding its target.

Another four majors were added in the second term, three of which came of Kongorong boots, pushing the lead out to 17 points.

Marnee Formosa was a standout on the day and she was already making herself known by this point.

She went on to top Kongorong’s best players in an impressive performance.

The first nail in the coffin came in the third quarter when the Hawks piled on five unanswered goals to carry a 47-point buffer into the final stanza.

South was kept scoreless in the last while another goal and behind from Kongorong put the margin out to 54 points.

Jade Longbottom joined Formosa at the pointy end of the Hawks’ list, also scoring two goals for her team.

Eadie Mustart topped the sheets with three majors, while Riley Buckingham, Zara Dirk, Taylor Cozzi and Katelyn Bowering rounded out the best players.

Correa Bachmann was the sole goal kicker for the Demons, while Ella Guest was named as their best on ground.

Captain Jarrah Altschwager was prominent again, with Lucy Pridham, Jessie Jennings and Alisha Stephens also earning mentions.

MUNDULLA 16.8 (104) d CASTERTON SANDFORD 0.0 (0)

Mundulla remains undefeated at the top of the Limestone Coast Women’s football leaderboard after an impressive 104-point win over Casterton Sandford.

The Cats struggled with player numbers again and as such were at the mercy of the powerful Mundulla outfit.

The writing was on the wall early and three goals in the opening term started things off in a modest fashion.

A five-goal quarter followed and with the Cats left scoreless the margin was out to 53 points at half time.

Chelsea Packer was making herself known in the forward line, as was Melody Maddern and the goals kept coming in the second half.

The third term produced Mundulla’s smallest yield, but the difference was still extended out to 71 with three goals.

The hosts put in a five-goal last quarter to finish strongly, with Kellsie Turner best on ground.

She was accompanied by Zoe Hawker, Matilda Harris and Kate Maddern, along with Natasha Horne and Melody Maddern.

Packer topped the goalkicking with five majors, while Maddern had four at the end of the day.

Kelsey Batt had three and Turner was another with multiple majors after scoring two.

The Cats did not bother the goal umpires all day and were scoreless at the end of it all.

Hinemoa Biddle-Maitland was named best on ground, while Libby Altorfer and Tessa Marra were also prominent.
