Women return to fairways

THE Mount Gambier Golf Club women played their first game of the season last week, with 45 players teeing off.

Traditionally the first round of the Summer Cup, sponsored by life member Isobel Phillips, is played in a stroke format.

The Division 1 win went to Heather Barry (92-21-71 nett).

Her split was 48 off the stick on the front nine and 44 on the back.

Pars on the 17th and 18th holes ensured she claimed the win.

One shot behind was Faye Mainwaring (83-11-72 nett).

Mainwaring had a strong front nine with 40 off the stick, which included six pars, plus another three pars on the back nine.

In Division 2, Maxine McGregor returned the score of the day with 103-34-69.

She played a consistent game, with 50 strokes on the front nine and 53 on the back.

It included pars on the seventh and 17th par 5 holes.

Runner-up was Sue Ryan (106-32-74 nett), with splits of 54/52 for her 106.

Balls were given out to players with the next best scores, commencing with Heather Teakle nett 73 down to Marie Douglas nett 76.

The speciality prizes went to Jeannette Braun for her shot on the par 3 eighth hole.

Best second shot on the par 5 first hole went to Janina Morrison with two big shots to be just 10 yards off the green.

B Grade winner was Helen Heaver and C Grade Jill Johnson.

Six women opted to play a stableford competition and the winner was Lorraine Bruhn with a nice score of 39 points.

Meanwhile, warm conditions greeted 20 women for Saturday’s stroke round.

Douglas won the day on a count-back, playing to her Handicap (96-23-73 nett).

She played consistent golf, with splits of 48/48, which included three pars.

Second place went to Penne Saffin (93-20-73 nett). From splits of 46/47, which included six pars.

The ball rundown went from Jan Shanahan nett 74 down to Lyn Hudson nett 79.

The pro shot went to Shanahan and the nearest the pin on the par 3 16th hole to Morrison.
