THE first of nine monthly medals for 2024 attracted 26 women to the Blue Lake Golf Club last week.

The warmer weather was welcomed for the stroke event, sponsored by life member Judy Collins, with the overall win going to Trudy Herbert.

Division 1 winner Karen Panagopoulos has shown good form lately, her win one of a few, including the previous Saturday in the first round of the Jetts Fitness Mount Gambier summer trophy. Wednesday’s scorecard of 91/20/71 had only one par recorded in the 47 outward strokes and that was on the dogleg ninth hole, along with a bogey seven on the par 3 second.

The inward nine of 44 included a par on the 12th hole and another bogey seven on the par 5 17th.

With only those couple of blemishes she was a worthy winner, signing for one under the scratch rating of 72.

Runner-up was Rosemary Martland (87/15/72) fought back after a few bogeys included in the 49 strokes.

She had pars on the fourth, fifth and eighth holes to be six strokes over her outward nine handicap.

She then shaved off 11 strokes on the inward nine to post 38, which included par on the 11th hole, a birdie on 13th, then a run of pars on 14th, 16th and 17th.

Following was Kate Hommelhoff (102/29/73) with splits of 50/52.

She would be disappointed with what could have been after having two consecutive penalties on the 10th hole resulting in a dreaded nine.

Medal winner Herbert topped the podium for Division 2, signing for 100/30/70, two strokes under her handicap.

Splits of 51/49 saw her outward score one under, then with a birdie on the dogleg 15th hole and even scoring finishing that nine also one under.

Runner-up was Johanna Gogan, posting 110/36/74 after two even nines of 55/55, which included pars on the second and 16th holes.

Lynda Nannings rounded out the podium with 107/33/75 after a count-back from Dianne Allen 117/42/75.

Nannings had the better back nine score of 51 after a chip-in par on the par 5 17th hole.

The pro-shot winner was Lesley McPherson with a birdie on the downhill par 3 fifth hole.

Others to have a birdie were Martland on the 13th hole (chip-in ferret) and Herbert on the 15th.

Lee Anderson (12th hole) and Nannings (17th) also had chip-in ferrets.

A par round was played on Saturday in ideal conditions.

The score of the day of +4 came from Cherryl Hill.

Hill plays off a 23 handicap and came out firing with a par on the first hole.

Unfortunately she wiped the long par 5 third hole, but then added plusses on the sixth, eighth and ninth to be 3-up.

She then parred the 10th and 11th holes, with wipes on the 12th, 14th, to finish with a plus on the 18th to finish 1-up).

Women’s handicapper Dianne Perryman finished runner-up after signing for square to her card. Perryman is off 20 and had par’s on the first, second and fifth holes, along with plusses on the sixth and eighth and three wipes.

She started the inward nine with wipes on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes, then plusses on the 14th and 17th, with a wipe on 18th to finish square.

Playing off 15, Martland finished third on -1.
