THE Mount Gambier Cycling Club (MGCC) last week unveiled a new sign on the fence of the Blue Lake Sports Park velodrome honouring a long-serving member of the club.

Members and friends of the MGCC, together with representatives of the Dowdell Family, the Lions Club of Mount Gambier and Allan Dowdell, gathered at the Blue Lake Velodrome for the unveiling of the new track signage in Dowdell’s honour.

Allan Dowdell has been a key contributor in the MGCC for over 70 years and it seemed only fitting to the current committee to recognise his efforts and value to the club community by honouring him with the naming of the Allan Dowdell Velodrome.

The sign sits prominently on the northern side of the velodrome, easily seen by those sitting in the stands.

After a few words from club president Damian Buckley and Dowdell himself, those present were allowed onto the track to view the signage from a closer vantage point.

Following the formalities, all present were invited to stay and enjoy a sausage sizzle while the riders from the Limestone Coast Cycling Academy were put through their paces by their coaches.

The riders were also given the opportunity to speak with Dowdell and share their recent successes at the State Track Championships in Adelaide.
