Crater Lakes hosts Classic event

TOP EFFORT: Mount Gambier's Kate Eldridge, Jessica Holman and Justin Clarke finished top of their classes at the weekend's Crater Lakes Classic.

MOUNT Gambier Disc Golf held its annual Crater Lakes Classic on the weekend in conjunction with the club championships and June league day.

Held over two rounds, Saturday afternoon was contested on the advanced layout, while Sunday morning’s round was played on the amateur course.

The weather was typical of a Mount Gambier winter with rain and wind across both days.

Those who were able to master the wet and windy conditions had a big advantage, with Happy Valley’s Gareth Morgan throwing the score to beat with a six under par.

He went on to finish the event with the overall best score, with an 11-under par more than enough to claim the Mixed Amateur category.

The weather on Sunday was better received with showers only at the beginning and end of the round.

There were some close results, including a playoff for second in the Mixed Amateur between Damien Malco and Michael Gliese, with the latter edging out his opponent.

Tim Bohan won the Mixed Pro Open category with a seven-under, with Matthew Noblet runner-up on four-under.

The Women’s Pro Open event had Sarah Lee top the field with a two-under par, besting Cassie Sweetten by six shots.

Rounding out the pro classes was the Mixed Pro 40+, which was won by Alex Costales with a one-under par.

On a local front, Mount Gambier dominated the Mixed Amateur 40+ category as Justin Clarke put in a strong performance to finish five-under par.

Next best for the class was fellow Mount Gambier disc golfer Ryan Nicholson with two-up, while another local in Damien Holman rounded out the podium with nine-up.

Kate Eldridge represented Mount Gambier in the Women’s Amateur 2 and claimed the win, while Mick Wilson managed a second place in the Mixed Amateur 3.

Jessica Holman claimed an easy win in the Girls’ 15 and Under as the only competitor, while Tayla Clarke finished second to Taryn Salter in the two-person Women’s Amateur 4 field.

As the Mount Gambier Disc Golf club championships, the best scoring male, female and junior was awarded the perpetual trophies.

The winners were Justin Clarke, Eldridge and Jessica Holman.
